Guest guest
- I'm terribly sorry for how they're treating you - you do not deserve it at all. You totally want what is best for your daughter and would move the Brooklyn Bridge to do it. We get it!! From my own inpatient experience with my son, at a non-OCD specialized hospital, just regular adolescent psych, I know what you mean about the approach of, " Just make them do it! " For us, because son's issue was contamination with home, I was able to work with them in doing ERPs just by coming in with my husband (although they never called it that) and they ended up being support staff for that. I can imagine it's not that simple with your daughter. I mean, does she even hoard there? Are they actually treating the OCD? Or is it more just to keep her safe from herself? Is she on meds that might be causing any of the issues? Can your therapist help YOU with how to help your daughter? (((hugs))) Rhonda cruel and unusual psychiatrists? Guest guest
Hi Thanks for your response. No they aren't helping me at all know how to deal with her, except to tell me I must reward her to get her to school on time ( she is at the day treatment school), which doesn't work ( which I am castigated for again), and that if she doesn't' get to school on time they can't help her , and that if I don't throw away her stuff they can't help her. There is a whole lot of very dysfunctional blame going on here with the treatment program basically because I believe they don't; really know how to help her or have the patience! SO they put it all on ME! Re: cruel and unusual psychiatrists? - I'm terribly sorry for how they're treating you - you do not deserve it at all. Guest guest
Hi , I don't have suggestions re treatment centres, I'm actually in Canada. But just wanted to give you my empathy on this. I experienced similar when our son was in a hospital day program. I remember feeling like I had signed up to be repeatedly kicked in the head. I felt like I was losing my mind, and would periodically blow and say things I regretted, but it was an impossible situation. I was fighting for my child to have a life, we needed help, could not cope at home, and they would say the most useless and/or unhelpful things, having no clue what it was like to live with. I was also told maybe I was the problem. I sucked it up for our son's sake, because it was all that was available to us, and truly hoped treatment for the OCD would eventually come, which it didn't. Not only that, I believe it damaged any future treatment with any doctor, ever. So, I cannot encourage you enough to seek an alternative, as you are doing. You might make another post and put " looking for doctor/treatment centre " in NYC. There are many on this board, someone must have ideas. Have you gone to the ocfoundation.org website and used the " find a therapist " tool? I don't know what is possible for you, but Storch has a centre in Florida, where you can do intensive outpatient treatment for three weeks. Family can stay at local Mac house. I have heard excellent feedback. Hoarding is not easy to treat, and truly requires someone specialized in this area. What treatment has your daughter received in the past? How did she end up in this program? Just wondering if you can go back to the referring person to discuss options perhaps, or any other doc you have had good rapport with. Last thought. They should have a family advocate attached to the program who you can appeal to, to address the treatment you are receiving, and to help you know what steps you can take. Hugs to you! Guest guest
Hi , No advice on therapists, just support. Parents should be a part of the treatment team. Seek out the treatment you know your daughter needs and remember that even experts aren't experts on everything. The really good ones will admit to that. Guest guest
That is SO frustrating!!!! How about calling Biobehavioral Institute in Great Neck because they often do free research studies and then your daughter could get free treatment. Also, try Columbia which has an anxiety disorder center. Finally, in White Plains, Weill Cornell right across from the mall, has a great anxiety disorder center for kids and they take insurance. Guest guest
It sure sounds to me like they are asking you to do the hard work, but aren't giving any support at all to your daughter to work her way through it. I would be enraged too! Did you check out the Florida program? Wonder if it might be worth the time, travel, etc. - look what you're going through now anyway! Seems like a big leap but you have lots of guts & could do it. Rhonda Re: cruel and unusual psychiatrists?
