Guest guest
Odd, I walked in the door, told them my kid has OCD and needs a 504 and got one no trouble at all. I would have the teacher this year make a list of ALL the accommodations she is using and present that as evidence that she is needing it. Also, any paperwork that you find in the files section, describing OCD as a neuropsyc disorder which leaves the child unavailable to learn (they don't necessarily have a learning disorder, but what is there is not capable of learning because it is consumed with repetitively doing whatever OCD has them doing. A 504 is for anyone that has a diagnosis that requires accommodations to be able to learn successfully. This includes if you are on crutches or use a walker ( long term) and have no difficulty learning at all! My niece only has one hand and has a 504. She can do EVERYTHING but cant be expected to type like everyone else so uses a voice recognition program. Push it-you will win. Also if you can get your current teacher to recommend it, all the better. Also a letter from the psychiatrist stating that it is needed. There is also a great book called " Teaching the Tiger " which every parent fighting a district should own. It is about teaching kids with ADD, TS and OCD. Good luck, I feel so fortunate that our district is so great about this all. I have 2 straight A students on 504's. They both need them for different reasons (OCD in one ADD in the other) but with them are TOTALLY successful. This year the special ed lady for my ADDer brought up that maybe he did not need it since he was getting straight A's and all his TEACHERS said yes he does need it- he has slow processing speed so needs testing accommodations of extra time for tests and his handwriting is unreadable so he needs to type things- really, how hard is that? These are the very kids who CAN be successful with a 504. If the special ed lady thinks this is not a dissability, she should come live in one of our houses for a couple weeks!
