He told me the other day he should try trans-cranial stimulation, which I researched and it seems preliminary as far as efficacy. We have looked into neurofeedback and his pdoc said there was not enough research to support that either. Guest guest
For me, the best medication has always been Anafranil. It is the first drug that was approved for OCD in the states and is a bit different than the SSRI's. The best I have ever felt was when I was on the maximum dosage of it. Unfortunately, it turned out not to be the best medication for me because I gain a ridiculous amount of weight on it, but my daughter has done amazingly on it for the past four years and she is quite thin. Guest guest
Has he ever done an intensive OCD program? Think of it like a sports camp - there's an energy and enthusiam there as well as a bunch of skilled coaches and cheerleaders, totally different from once a week basically on-your-own therapy. I think there was a group synergy with my son in both inpatient and outpatient that gave a huge boost to his treatment. Guest guest
Rhonda, he has never done an intensive program. He is pretty low key and does not do well with enthusiasm or any kind of stimulation. Gets neg. and cynical. If I told him, he was part of some research study, then he would be all over it. I was looking into something like that or at least a consult with an OCD specialist. I found one online at Mayo so I will call there tomorrow. He says now he thinks only brain surgery would work for him. Found out about the Parkinson treatment with the implant and thinks that would be it. Pretty down, tends to get depressed, especially this time of year. Gets very tired of having one ritual go, just to have it replaced with another. Also, waking up now at 4 am, eats a snack and then back to bed til I get him up by 10. Sleep tends to get messed up when he is depressed. People talk about self-motivation. He does get himself to do his online math class and the ERP stuff, but I can tell it is like slogging through mud. Maybe too b/c his friends have been out of town. Tonight, he is going to see a friend and his mood is def. better. in WI Roy-17. OCD/anxiety/depression, ADD. Prozac, Busbar, Adderall. > > Has he ever done an intensive OCD program? Guest guest
Jordana, I called Mayo and then sent note to my pdoc for him to send med. info. Roy's pdoc called back and said that he was OK with the Mayo referral but that they would prob. change med. to anafrinal and recommend ERP on a more strict protocal, with the psychologist he currently sees. Thinks Roy should stay with his psychologist b/c he has a good relationship with her. Says problems sometimes with kids going to program like , go home and don't have a psychologist to go to where they have good relationship to work on ERP. So, now I don't know if I should even proceed with the Mayo referral. Money and time. And also, he would need to switch from Prozac to Anafrinal. Are they much dif. from each other? He also has depression and ADD. I am talking with his psychol tomorrow about more structured ERP. Thanks. Roy-17. OCD,Depression, anxiety, ADD. Guest guest
Pdoc called. We decided to really focus on the ERP and hopefully not have to mess with the meds. He rec. the OCD in children and adol: a CBT manual by March. I also talked with the psychol. and will ralk more with her about doing this intensive CBT, with roy. He is calling her too. I am hoping this will work and I can get Roy on board with this. He has kind of given up and is focusing on the brain implant thing, I think mostly b/c he wants it to end so badly and sees it as the miracle cure. Thanks for your input. in WI- Roy-17.
