Guest guest
Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself, I live in the UK, I have three children, two girls and a boy, and three months ago, like a bolt from the blue my daughter started to feel she was choking on her clothes. She couldn't swallow food or water due to an intense fear that she would choke. She couldn't sleep because she felt something was going to choke her in the night, she had thoughts in her head that she was constantly putting herself and others in danger by doing totally undangerous things. As family we were totally bewildered, her obsessions and compulsions were severe, I had to practically fight to be heard at my gps, but I eventually got a referral to a psychiatrist who diagnosed her with severe ocd. She was put on antidpressents and antipsychotics, and fast tracked for cbt. She was improving slowly until they tried to stop the antipyscotics. They upped her antidepressent dose to try and compensate but it didn't work and she has got worse. She is now back on the antipsychotics but it will take a while for them to build up in her system again. She has been bullied at school for four years and due to the ocd has been unable to attend school for the past three months. She is having all sorts of intrusive messages, sexual, violent, terrible thoughts that are eating her up inside. Every time she gets on top of one another one takes it place. My daughter is a lovely, caring 15 year old. She is considerate and very kind, and watching her battle with ocd has broken my heart. It would be great to hear from anyone in a similar position as it would make me feel slightly less alone.
Guest guest
The onset of symptoms being like a bolt from the blue suggests the possibility of PANS or PANDAS, in which strep or another infection can trigger the sudden onset of OCD symptoms. Has this been looked into? Others on this list have extensive knowledge about the subject. In any event, glad you found us. Has she been established with a specialist in CBT/ERP? I think all of us know the heartbreak of seeing our child taken over by obsessions and compulsions. You are fighting for her health and we are here for you every step of the way. > Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself, I live in the UK, I have three children, two girls and a boy, and three months ago, like a bolt from the blue my daughter started to feel she was choking on her clothes. Guest guest
Thanks so much for coming to the board and jumping in and sharing. You are certainly not alone!! Although what you have been through is confusing and tototally overwhelming and heart-breaking, which are all terribly lonely feelings. There are folks on here who can address the meds much better than me and I know that some have had experience with the bullying too, so hang in there, you will get some great responses. For me as a parent with a son whose life was also totally stalled out by OCD in indescribable ways, it is a huge fight for some of us to get the help we need in the system. You will become an incredibly strong person, more than you ever imagined. I lived day to day with heartbreak with my son and each day I just did the things he needed that day to stay alive, miserable as he was, as I tried to figure out what to do. Little by little you get there. Have you checked out PANDAS at all? Did your daughter have any symptoms earlier than 3 months ago? Have they used any antibiotics at all? warmly, Rhonda My daughter Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself, I live in the UK, I have three children, two girls and a boy, and three months ago, like a bolt from the blue my daughter started to feel she was choking on her clothes. Guest guest
Hi Mumtoelly! I'm a single mom, 3 sons, grown now. Oldest is 27, then I have twins, age 23 (not identical). (23) has OCD; also an Aspergers diagnosis (on autism spectrum), but you have to spend time with him to notice the Aspergers, sorta " mild. " 's OCD came on suddenly, seemingly, too, at around age 11.5. At first it was a lot of physical type compulsions (easy to see OCD stuff). Presently it is more " thoughts. " His type OCD is mostly the " scrupulosity " type, where religion is mixed up in it; that is, you have " bad thoughts " about God/religion, etc. For him, being a great guy and a Christian, that's HARD. He was on medication when younger, which helped SO MUCH. But when OCD " thoughts " started later, he has just refused meds since. Anyway, somehow he has managed to graduate college. He won't talk about his OCD (never has much), but I think he's just gotten sorta used to it, manages to " go on with his day " though the thoughts do upset him. Hate that the meds got " messed up " somewhat and having to start over with the antipsychotics! Maybe it won't take too long for them to kick back in since she wasn't totally off them? I'm sure that choking feeling had to be scary. We've had parents in our group before with children having an OCD fear/feeling about choking. I hope your daughter finds some kind of " comfort " knowing that she has OCD, that OCD is the cause of her thoughts and it's not *her*. And those type thoughts are also common with OCD, whether an adult or a 4 year old, any age those can happen! Also knowing that OCD can get so much better, with therapy (which takes work) and medication can help so much too when finding the right one or combinations. Does she keep mostly to herself with the thoughts or does she open up to you about them? Glad you found our group, (North Carolina) > > Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself, I live in the UK, I have three children, two girls and a boy, and three months ago, like a bolt from the blue my daughter started to feel she was choking on her clothes.
