Guest guest
My daughter did this. The University of Minnesota did a clinical study on something called NAC for hair pulling, and there is some thinking that it would also help with other self-harm compulsions. She should talk with a doctor, probably a specialist, but my daughter takes five pills a day and it has helped her with her hair pulling. I've heard that some kids grow out of skin picking, too, but I guess I wouldn't count on that. NAC stands for N - ACETYL CYSTEINE It's a supplement. Guest guest
First, a good therapist (some specialize in picking and trich). My dd works on competing responses (squeeze hands together instead & a moldable eraser to keep hands busy) and delaying. The higher anxiety the more she does it. Started with her head, then legs, arms, and sometimes face. She often doesn't realize she is doing it so I just say " arm " or something to cue her. We tried NAC without much success, although not at the doses mentioned. My understanding is that it can take a good 4-6 weeks if the NAC does work. I believe you can google for studies or look in the group files for more on the NAC. My best to your friend, > > I'm emailing for a good friend of mine who has a 9 year old who constantly picks at ther skin. To the point that she is scarring her arms and face. If there is any bump she will sctratch and dig at it. Any suggestions. > L & H on Maui >

Guest guest
My daughter has had trich (as well as OCD) since infancy. She had fantastic results with Anafranil. She hasn't pulled at all since she started on it in 4th grade and she is now in 7th grade. At the point she started on the medication, we had tried all different therapists who taught her the behavior mod methods to stop, but she wasn't successful. She now has long beautiful flowing blonde hair that she gets complimented on all the time!! Re: picking at skin My daughter did this. Guest guest
Yes! Anafranil has worked for us! The turn around was amazing! We saw almost immediate results after many other medication tries and therapists. I am thankful to have my daughter back. She is herself, and is not tortured by intrusive thoughts, picking, nightmares. Anxiety is gone. There are still small moments when there is an obvious trigger, but overall she is great! She is even in the upcoming middle school play! I feel like I have my daughter back! > > My daughter has had trich (as well as OCD) since infancy. She had fantastic results with Anafranil. Guest guest
Same here. My daughter's OCD was making it really hard for her to be like other kids, but the Anafranil helped so much. By the way, I have severe OCD, and when I am on Anafranil, I do great. Re: picking at skin > > > My daughter did this.
