Guest guest
My 12 year old daughter started out on meds for ADHD when she was in 3rd grade. Just recently go the OCD diagnosis. She has been on Prozac for almost two weeks. The Prozac is working wonderfully for her anxiety! She is like a new person. But it seems like she is almost overly excited now....like maybe her ADHD meds are not working. In fact, I got a call from the school today for the first time since she went on ADHD meds in 3rd grade. They were complaining about her talking. I would like to tell them to " bite me " , but I don't want to cause more problems for her. > > My 14 yr old son is on meds for OCD. It now appears that he has ADHD. His DR. said that all effective meds for ADHD would cause increased anxiety which is not good for OCD. Therefore, ADHD will go untreated. > Does anyone have any experience trying to treat both of these? > >

Guest guest
, I can only mention what I've read from others treating both. Some do manage to get meds for both right; might mean tweaking the dosages or switching a med or two to get the right combo (of course we would all hate that). Some parents have had to choose just one to treat. I hope you can find a good balance for your son! Question - did the ADHD symptoms start after any OCD med changes? Wondering could that have triggered the ADHD type symptoms. > > My 14 yr old son is on meds for OCD. It now appears that he has ADHD. Guest guest
My 14 yr. old has been on celexa for 5+ years for OCD. Just added 150 welbutrin for his adhd. Wonderful improvement in anger and impulse control. My 7 yr. daughter is on Prozac for OCD. Our doctor said it can be very stimulating. Perhaps you want to try another SSRI. Celexa and Lexapro are less stimulating. Just some thoughts. Good luck Becky Reynolds
Guest guest
It's true that many ADHD meds (the stimulants) can increase anxiety, but it does depend on the individual child. Many children with anxiety are treated effectively with stimulants for their ADHD. Sometimes the anxiety decreases b/c the triggers related to the ADHD are reduced. My ds takes dexedrine, along with zoloft. He was first placed on zoloft, then the dexedrine was added for stamina problems. The stamina problems didn't become apparent until after he was placed on the zoloft, but it could be that this was an underlying condition that was unmasked once the anxiety was under control, rather than a side effect of the zoloft. He's on a very tiny dose and it does not aggravate his anxiety at all. The zoloft reduces his anxiety so well that it seems to have a protective effect from any possible agitation that the stimulant could potentially trigger. Although 'by the book', your doctor's rationale for leaving the ADHD untreated is accurate, I don't believe that it meets the current standard of care. If ADHD symptoms are impairing functioning, then many, many doctors would do an ADHD med trial since these meds are relatively short and immediate acting and can be discontinued without much if any difficulty. You could trial it during the weekend to see how it goes. Fay On Tue, Sep 13, 2011 at 7:37 PM, lrbaka@... wrote: > ** > > > My 14 yr old son is on meds for OCD. It now appears that he has ADHD.
