Guest guest
Gosh, I'm in Santa CA. Anyone near me? I have a 9 year old daughter, mildly autistic, despite being in the school system's Special Education classes all her life, she was never diagnosed with Autism. We suddenly started doing research and realized she displays many of the classic symptoms, although not all are severe. I'm blessed to be here and look forward to learning how to better connect and teach and learn from my wonderful, incredible, sweet little girl! Don > > Haha, I got you beat, lol. Guest guest
Hello Don, I am new to this board. We also live in Calif., but, unfortunately we live in the Temecula area in Southern Ca. I noticed that many on this board live across the country. My daughter is 15 and is very mildly autistic. We have not really had her officially tested, but for a psychologist, who said it was high functioning. Her main problems are social and she tends to " rip " at her fingers or pull eyebrows or eyelashes out or rub her skin till raw. I am always on her about it though. She is the typical computer geek and loves to draw and live in her fantasy world. She is mostly into " Sonic the Hedgehog " and has been since 2nd grade! She has never had language problems, except for talking like Furby for a couple of years (that was a few years ago). It is hard when they are so high functioning, because they seem to fall through the cracks. Especially being a girl. I am homeschooling now and have given up on really getting any services. I know I did not try very hard though. She is very intellegent and gets great grades, it just takes her twice as long to get the work done as she zones out alot. I don't know why I am writing all of this, but just wish you the best with your little blessing. They are all gifts from the Lord! Amy > > > > Haha, I got you beat, lol. Guest guest
Hi Amy, Thanks so much for connecting with me about your daughter. My girl and I play Sonic the Hedgehog too! LOL She really loves the Cars video game, too, so we play together. The only acting out she does is when she gets frustrated with something like trying to thread a bead that has no hole, or if she can't find something. She's never mastered number two on the toilet, but she finally goes pee there! We're encouraging her to continue to try to remember to use the toilet for poop but she says she doesn't always feel it coming on. We've worked with specialists on this with Maddie and managed to get her to use the toilet for peeing, so we're half way there! I appreciate you sharing about your daughter, Amy. Maddie is very intelligent, too, and is pretty phenomenal on the keyboard, coming home from church after hearing a song one time and playing the melody on the piano with very few mistakes! I'm a musician too, so we're beginning to record some songs now too, and she's very excited about that, as am I. We plan on homeschooling the minute we see the world rubbing off on her, but so far she's still the sweet, patient, wonderful little girl she's always been, despite being in Special Education with a couple of mean kids and some children who act out a lot. She's pretty independent so she hasn't become like the kids around her, praise God! I'm looking for some actual groups up here in Sonoma County, to see if we can connect with other parents and other children who have autism. So far, I know no one!
