Guest guest
Our daughters psychologist for her ocd is recommending we talk to her pcp or get a psychiatric evaluation to see about some SSRI treatment. I am hesitant to put her on medication because her symptoms at this time are much better and they are not affecting her daily functioning. She would describe her " thoughts as irritating! " Just wondering what some of your thoughts were on both SSRI's in general and how they help children and if there are any natural treatments. Thanks
Guest guest
Hi , Many find the SSRI meds very helpful in dealing with OCD. No one particular of them is better, just have to pick one and try it. Some have to try 2 or 3 before they get to *the* one that works. My son has only tried Celexa, it was our first one and it worked well. (yay!) There is no one particular supplement that everyone has found helpful, but here's some I can think of that some have felt helped their children. Others may have tried the same thing and didn't get any benefit, so it's just a " try and wait and see " type thing. We used inositol powder with my son and some others have felt it helped too, so that would be my first choice to try (just me personally). There's information on it in our FILES section and you can search through past posts for " inositol " and see a lot about it. Also search thru posts (because a lot has been written in the past about supplements) for Native Remedies. There were 2 products at that company that some found helpful. I think one was called PureCalm. Let's see...some have found changing the diet helpful. Cutting out gluten seems to be the one I recall some finding of benefit. Some have just tried it, others have had their children checked for gluten intolerance and found it may lessen the OC behaviors. Those are the main ones I can think of right now, though I know there's some more things.... > > Our daughters psychologist for her ocd is recommending we talk to her pcp or get a psychiatric evaluation to see about some SSRI treatment. Guest guest
Hi there, I have a 9 year old son with a mild case of OCD and no meds. I am aware that there may be a time when his OCD may get out of control and he may need meds. But till then I do whatever I can to help avoid that scenario. Awareness and educating the child about their OCD, ERP, Physical activity, limiting screen time, reducing anxiety, increasing time for activities they do enjoy. Also find out if there are any gluten or any other allergies [ these are hard to nail down ], avoid any processed food, sugar, colored food etc. All of these are much much harder than taking meds but I think if it does work it the best thing for your child! I am NO expert here. I dont know your childs history but you mention that she is able to function daily…then why the meds? Good luck!
