Guest guest
We're in the same weight gain quandry here. Both my son and I gain weight on the OCD meds, although my daughter doesn't. We just tried a new SSRI in the hopes it would do what Lexapro did for him, but without weight gain. Well, both of us have been doing awfully. On Saturday evening, my son called to come get him from a Bar Mitzvah because he was having unending obsessions and fears and his stomach was killing him from it all. He said he just can't stand it, so our decision is probably to go back on Lexapro or another med that may cause weight issues, but at least help. I hate the fact that even the weight gain causes issues because of how society views it, and we can't just tell people that it is caused by medication for a mental illness. UGH!!! Re: Inositol and weight gain? Thanks, and Chris! It's very frustrating! I'm considering getting her off Lexapro anyway as it doesn't seem to be " working " anymore at the current dosage. I'm afraid to increase for the weight gain issue, thinking of asking the doc to switch her to Prozac or something more " time-tested " . I'm also in a quandary about increasing the inositol because as you said, it " might " be boosting the weight-gaining effects! She's seeing a counselor, but not an OCD specialist. But she runs out of things to say, she says. She's not really the type of person to just talk and talk. The OCD therapists are 2 hours away and not on our insurance, a long, ongoing issue. She does school and softball, and none of these therapists do weekend appts. Don't want to take away her softball; she loves being part of the team even if she doesn't play much. It also keeps her mind focused on something other than the OCD. What to do, what to do...... My daughter started taking one pill (500 mg) back in February daily with the intention of increasing slowly. She complained early on of stomach upset which seemed to ease up later, BUT she's put on at least 20 more pounds! I had her stop the inositol recently just to see if there was any noticeable effect and she said she was really tired the two days she's been off it. > > Not sure what to do at this point, but wondered if anyone has seen weight gain with the inositol? She's also on 10mg of Lexapro and that in itself caused a 30-lb gain, so 20 more is not a good thing! > > Debbie > > >

Guest guest
I am sorry, Jordana, that is tough for your son - and you! It's not fair he can't go and have fun at the event like all the other kids. I know that the ADHD and autism parents were going through this 10 years ago. It seems like there's a group like us that has to suffer enough and get mad enough to change how society sees these conditions. I hope you can find something else that works for you. Hope your daughter really enjoys the trip too! Bravo for you for standing up for her so she can. Rhonda Re: Inositol and weight gain? Thanks, and Chris! It's very frustrating! Guest guest
The whole weight gain issue varies at our house with the meds. My daughter (24) is on adderall 30 mg. and Zoloft. Maxed out on the Celexa. Still skinny as a rail. My son (22) with the BP is on Lithium. Has been on a bunch of other ones that are sup. to cause weight gain. Still skinny as a rail. Both of those kids never gained that pre-puberty weight. Roy with the OCD (17) is on the adderall 30 mg., busbar, Prozac 50 mg. and has some weight on him but within normal. He is sensitive about his " man boobs " as he calls them but really the pdoc says he is an OK weight. 5'9,130. I think more out of shape since he does zero exercise. He did put on weight during his pre-puberty time, not overweight but def. weight gain. Another son also put the pre-pub. weight on but he is very active with sports so keeps it off now. I don't know how old your child is but maybe it is related to pre-pub. and it can be def. hard on their self-esteem during this time. I am on Lexapro,5 mg. so small dose. Prob. would gain if more mg. I also exercise alot and have an active job. I read that Prozac had less weight gain but my sis is on Prozac and has gained(not a big exerciser). So who knows. It is hard to get them to exercise if it is not something they enjoy or see any benefits. Exercise relaxes me, but Roy says he feels worse after. I think Roy has just resigned himself to his body or is so tired and has no desire to try and get in shape. Just a thought. in WI > ** > > > I am sorry, Jordana, that is tough for your son - and you! Guest guest
Thanks. The stigma about mental illness makes for a lot of loneliness. I don't let anyone connected with my job know about my OCD, and actually only my closest friends and family know. Thus, if I am feeling really down about the effects of my own OCD or my kids, I can't really let on about this to most people. My daughter feels really lonely because she is basically ostracized by most of the kids in her grade because of how she was when her OCD and compulsive hair pulling were off the charts when she was in elementary school, even though she is now in her second year of middle school. My daughter was upset when a group of girls who treat her like a leper went on a walk to raise money for childhood diabetes because a friend of theirs has it and the girls were celebrated for their caring. She felt that it was so unfair that she has something that causes such a struggle for her, but no one would go on a walk to raise money for it because it has a stigma to it so they can't know she has it, and also that on top of this, she not only has to cope with the OCD, but rather than support her cause, the kids avoid her as a result.
