Guest guest
this is our issue,it is draining. She is getting behavioral therapy ,on klonopin and abilify. its a nightmare. She too would have everything taken away then to go to school. She's 15,this started in 6th grade. jennie School Refusal/Anxiety I am so very glad I found this support group. I am struggling with a 10year old son, who was diagnosed with OCD. He was getting CBT from Sept-Dec, but it didn't help him very much and also the OCD was not full blown at that time. Since Dec his OCD came on with a vengence. School refusal is vey prevalent and just trying to get him there is a huge struggle. It is very sporadic, Forgethomework, he just freezes up. I am working with the school to get him an IEP but that is just starting. We were advised to put him on Zoloft (which) we did about 2 months ago - he started out on 25mgs, then went to 50mgs. We saw s big change in the compulsions but the school anxiety was still very prevelant. His psy. increased the dosage to 75mgs yesterday. We have a new therapist lined up to help him next Monday. I wanted to see if anyone else is stuggling with this and how they are managing. Bribes don't work for him and he would rather sit doing very little in the house. He is a darling boy but his defiance is strong because of the OCD. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all so much. JJ
Guest guest
Jenni,  I am so glad to hear I am not alone. I am emotionally drained because I wake up each morning knowing the struggle ahead. I know scare tactics are pointless but I feel the more he is out of school, the harder it will be. I am trying to live in the present BUT can't help flashing forward to the future and what it holds. The only thing that keeps me going is that tomorrow brings new hope.  Thanks for your response, we are all in this ugly fight together but at least we have support and are able to share our stories through this wonderful site.  JJ ________________________________ To: Sent: Wednesday, March 7, 2012 8:32 AM Subject: Re: School Refusal/Anxiety  this is our issue,it is draining. Guest guest
I can sure relate to what you are going through, so sorry to hear you are having so much trouble. My son is ten years old as well and has had OCD/anxiety since kindergarten but always managed to get through until this year. By Feb, he was so stressed about going to school that is was impossible to get him out the door because he was performing so many rituals. He finally just said that he absoulutely could not go. I pulled him from school and we started him on Prozac. His psychiatrist filled out the forms our school needed to get him a home-bound teacher 2 days per week. He already had an ed assessment this fall and has an IEP for math. His anxiety went way down as soon as he was assured that he did not have to deal with school. He is in 5th grade this year and changes classes and had 3 different teachers. I know keeping kids home is not an option for everyone. My dh and I both work full time, but I am fortunate to have a job that allows me to work flexible hours. Hang in there, I know what you are going through. Praying that everything gets better for you soon.
Guest guest
,  Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. I really needed it today as I am having my onw internal panic attack which I never thought was possible as I have always held it together somehow. Just knowing that someone else can relate can lift your spirits.  Please God this will all pass and light will shine.  Warm regards, JJ ________________________________ To: " " < > Sent: Wednesday, March 7, 2012 1:10 PM Subject: Re: School Refusal/Anxiety  I can sure relate to what you are going through, so sorry to hear you are having so much trouble. Guest guest
exactly,to start your mornings like that is just exhausting. I use to handle it much better , now im getting angry . Guest guest
Thank you for your response. Yes, he has a cell phone but doesn't want to use it. He has a wonderful teacher who is very accommodating but my son still has fear of feeling the odd man out and doesn't want to bring attention to himself.  It is a rough time and we are still trying to figure it all out.  Warm regards JJ ________________________________ To: Sent: Wednesday, March 7, 2012 2:59 PM Subject: Re: School Refusal/Anxiety  We had this problem with my 6 year old. The only thing that worked was giving him a cell phone that he was able to use to call home at ANY time during the day with NO restriction and NO questions asked. We told him him that, if asked, we would pick him up. For him, being at school was okay. It was the fear of being trapped that made him hysterical. In the beginning, we got a ton of calls. Now, a year later they are rare (once a month). He needed to feel like he had control. By the way, he only asked me to pick him up once. I arrived, no questions asked, and he decided to stay at school. Kids want to do the right things. It's just a matter of helping them find a way to accommodate their issues. I firmly believe that forcing him to go to school would have been counterproductive. Connected by DROID on Verizon Wireless Re: School Refusal/Anxiety this is our issue,it is draining.
