Hi Miranda - look up inositol on this list in the archives. It has worked for a

lot of children, especially younger. I even started my 17yo on it last week and

I saw more calmness immediately once I was up to 3 grams. I wish I had time to

work up to a higher dose but I don't. Best wishes!

OCD Medications

Are there any new medications that do not cause weight gain?

My daughter has autism as well as OCD and very limited verbal skills.

She was on Abilify and it did help to decrease her behaviors but her appetite

was non stop and the weight gain was immediate and she kept gaining the entire

time she was on it, I finally had to pull her off of it for fear she was going

to suffer physically as a result.

She has also tried other meds including fluvoxomine.

We finally 9 months ago pulled her off of all meds and have tried to keep her

anxiety down and avoid triggers but OCD is again consuming a huge portion of her

day and making it hard for her to learn.

I hate the thought of putting her back on medications as she can not tell me

if she is suffering side effects but at the same time I am desperate to not let

the OCD swallow her entire day.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think it different people have different results. From what I understand the

SSRI's cause significant weight gain in some and no weight gain for others. My

daughter has never had weight gain from medication, yet my son and I both get

increased appetite and carb craving on any of the meds we've tried so far. We

tried the newest one and while it hasn't caused increased appetite, both of us

got extremely depressed and our OCD worsened, so I don't know if it was caused

by that. There is a lot in our lives right now (a close uncle is dying) so we

aren't sure how much is or isn't medication related.

Hi,

My son also had weight gain on Abilify. We switched him to Rilutek and it

has helped tremendously with his OCD. It is an off label use of the med,

but it has really helped him.

Good luck!

Hi Mike,

Rilutek sounds very interesting, as my son is terrified of the weight gain that

Abilfy could cause. Do you have any more details about Rilutek? I googled it

and it looked pretty good, other than possibly being VERY expensive. What has

your experience been with side effects, what have you been told about safety and

what was the cost like? I am thinking we could have trouble getting it because

we can't document weight gain with Abilify because my son is so unwilling to try

it. He is 17 and his OCD is a pretty big thing, but he IS still managing to

function pretty well in school and is actually relatively happy. But his OCD

takes away a lot from his life and if something looks like it might help,

without too much of a down side, we might get him to go for it. He has been on

Prozac 80 mg a day for several years with no side effects, which has helped

somewhat, but less than we would like. He would be willing to try something

that didn't have the range of Ablify's side effects.

Thanks!

My son was also on abilify last year. He gained 30 pounds in 3 months. The

medication was very effective, but his cholesterol shot up to 230, so we had to

take him off. About 6 months later, after a short stay in an in-patient

facility and many horrible days, we put him back on it. The second time around

after a few months break, abilify continued to work, but the weight gain was not

there. He lost the weight he had gained before and did not regain any weight.

He is 16 now.

My daughter is on Celexa now & we've not had any weight gain or other bad side

effects. It's helping make her less stressed, but isn't a miracle type cure for

us. Hope you find something that works with minimal side effects.

Our son, now 13, also has gained a significant amount of weight with Abilify.

He is also on Fluoxetine, Gabapentin and Guanfacine so I wasn't sure if the

weight gain was due to a combination of the meds or just Abilify. I'm thinking

the Abilify is the big factor here! At his last physical a few weeks ago, he was

at 199, which was up 50 pounds since his physical the year before, but the thing

that gets me is the doctors don't seem concerned about his weight. You can't

tell me that it's healthy to be that heavy. My son does not like his weight and

wants to lose, but he can't seem to get a grip on his eating. I, myself, have

recently lost 36 pounds on Weight Watchers and while he could probably come to

the meetings with me, there are 2 reasons I don't want him to....1. deep down I

know he won't follow what they recommend and it would be a waste of money at

$39.95 a month (I was hoping him just hearing what other people say would help)

and 2. selfishly, this is MY time. I don't get much time to myself where

others in my family can't " include " themselves! I'm asking for a 1/2 hour

weekly meeting to myself. Do I feel guilty feeling this way...yes, BUT, I am

pushing past the guilt and going. If my son is having an " off " day and I feel

there will be issues while I am gone (with his sister), I will have him come

along with me. It does bother me when he's there because I feel I can't really

speak up and say things like I normally would because he is the reason I stress

eat and I don't want him to feel bad hearing me say things about it!

My question along these lines is has anyone had a child successfully lose weight

while still on Abilify or is it something beyond their control type thing?
