Guest guest
My sister took my 10 yo dd for her first horseback riding lesson last Tuesday - just for something fun for her birthday. I know horses can be good therapy for kids, but didn't expect anything and this was not the intent for the lesson. But, ever since then, dd's OCD has been SIGNIFICANTLY better. It is amazing! I don't know if it is from that or not, but I am thrilled! She is also sleeping better. Also, we quit her old therapist (she did not like her, she is " old " and she wasn't comfortable with her), so I think that was a relief. So that might be adding to the improvement. I am shocked, this is the best she has been all summer. We see her new therapist this afternoon, so hopefully that turns out well. And she has another horsebackriging lesson tomorrow. Guest guest
Thanks for sharing that story! There IS something special about horses - they have a calming effect - perhaps the horse reduced her stress level....Keep us posted its really interesting! > > My sister took my 10 yo dd for her first horseback riding lesson last Tuesday - just for something fun for her birthday. Guest guest
Sharon, so glad to hear that. Almost wish you could cut one or the other out (horse or new therapist) to see which it is, lol. Animal lover that I am, I'll credit the horse. May be that she is excited about learning and some of the OCD issues aren't getting the attention they normally would. We'll take it! > > My sister took my 10 yo dd for her first horseback riding lesson last Tuesday - just for something fun for her birthday. Guest guest
Thanks! We went to the new therapist and she is WONDERFUL! We went over soooo much stuff and I learned a lot of non medicative things we can do at home, small changes we can make around the house, with her day to day living, with her diet, etc. Dd is comfortable with her and was willing to consider taking a supplement. I have all the info upstairs, will post more about it tomorrow.  She has another horse lesson tomorrow, so we will see how it goes. 2 positive things at once and dare I hope for a day with NO worries?! Today has been wonderful. Guest guest
I grew up with horses and feel I had OCD back then (still do). I am sure the horses helped me. I grew up with lots of pets and I think they did help. Sharon To: Sent: Monday, August 1, 2011 11:02 AM Subject: Re: Improvement  Thanks for sharing that story! Guest guest
Thanks. Last night she started losing it a little. She was up early today and is losing control already. I think it is going to be a difficult day. She had a wonderful 10 day stretch with almost NO need for reassurance. But today she is starting with the throat, breathing, etc. issues al. ready.  Her therapist suggested Relax Max (inositol). She doesnt really like the taste, but has taken it a couple of times. She does not like taking it. I told her this morning she is going to need to take it at some point today. If this doesnt help, then we are to try 5-HTP. She also suggested adding Omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin D3 to her diet. Also more protein (which I know she needs), especially as a bed time snack (in hopes it will help her sleep better). We talked a lot about nutrition, too, and working to cut out sugar (she said caffiene, too, but dd doesnt have much of that). We are doing some aroma therapy, too. We used to do a lot of that when dd was younger, but havent in awhile. She even suggested those sea bands (bracelet things for motion sickness),w hich we are going to get this weekend. Also deep breathing exercises, which we do already. A lot of the suggestions were things we have done in the past, but havent lately, so we are back to them. I am hoping these things help.  Sharon To: Sent: Thursday, August 4, 2011 12:03 PM Subject: Re: Improvement  That is wonderful news, Sharon!! Guest guest
She does take chewable vitamins, but has to read the labels every time we get a new bottle - even if it is the exact same thing we have used before (just in case things changed...). I actually got her to take a Vit D3 childrens chewable vitamin last night! I had pills at home, ones to swallow, she would not do that. I found orange flavor chewable. She read the whole label, asked if I was SURE that was what the therapist suggested, asked if it was the specific brand, etc. This is HUGE for her! I will try those things. Today has been pretty good, not great, but not awful. The last few days were tough. Sharon To: Sent: Monday, August 8, 2011 5:15 PM Subject: Re: Improvement  Oh yeah, I told I was the only mom giving Kool-Aid at breakfast! Did she ever take any kind of chewable vitamins for children before? If so, maybe you can compare it to those, have her take one and then give her her inositol " drink. " There's some good flavors of chewable vitamin C out there, sort of sweet-tarty, if she'd be interested in trying something - if she hasn't yet. And then for omega3, the brand Coromega has flavors, I liked the orange, it's like a pudding consistency, reminded me of those orange ice creamsicles (sp?). -- Just trying to think of some " fun " ways to make taking vitamins more appealing for her and get that inositol in! > > Thanks. I will suggest those things to her. I will try it in koolaid (not my fav choice of drinks, but if it gets her to drink it, good!). I did try it in sprite over the weekend. VERY fizzy!! I told her it is like a vitamin, not a medicine, but she is still against it. > Sharon
Guest guest
Thanks so much, Chris!
