Hi my name is I have twin girls that are 7 years old. One of

my girls have Autism. I knew something was wrong around the 18th month

she stop saying dada she was the first one. As she got older her eye

contact was not at us. It seem like she was in her " own world " never

played with her sister. At around 2 years they both were getting

speech,ot and pt. My other daughter Amie just took off once i had then

in special ed for preschool. on the other hand was having a

hard time at school. Her behaviors were of screaming etc. if nothing

was going her way. we lived in Va beach at the time and she was in a

classroom for kids with Autism. But then we had to move to Kings Bay,Ga

since my husband is NAvy. ever since moving here the schools here are

not that great for kids with Autism. They don't have a classroom for

Autism she is mixed in with other kids that are disabled. which is not

helping my daugher. was diagnosed at 6 years old. we are

getting ABA at home only for 20 hours a month which is not enough. The

schools here are clueless in ABA and trying to talk them is a battle.

She is verbal but still have issues with the screaming and such. I mean

screaming were your ears will hurt afterwards. I'm hoping things will

get better and we can move back to Va where they have knowledge about

Autism and not here in GA where they are still stuck in the stone age.

Hi ,

I hope things get better, too. You don't want to be " stuck in the

Stone Age " where autism is concerned. We're pretty lucky out here in

California.

Hi !

Your daughter sounds a lot like mine when she was little. You're

absolutely right that she needs so much more than what Georgia

schools are offering her. I'm glad you know the difference. My

daugher, Katrina had that horrible " screech " that would leave your

ears ringing for hours afterwards. She would do it when she was

overloaded, frustrated, didn't get her way, when she was excited or

just for kicks sometimes! Oh, it was horrible! She didn't have any

words until she was almost five and didn't start putting sentences

together until she was six. She had the same signs as a baby that

your daughter had as far as speech and eye contact...it's all too

familiar.

She's now eleven and a half and she is mainstreamed into a regular

classroom (going into 5th grade) with an aide. She goes into

resource room for help with Math and Reading but other than that,

she's doing great! I can't shut her up! Whahoo! :) (sometimes I

have to tell myself " , you prayed for this! " ) She's a preteen

who's into Hannah Montana, The Jonas Brothers, wearing lipstick and

high heels. She still has problems with socializing with her peers

and isn't always quite sure as to how to strike up a conversation

with them but that's okay. She also doesn't always understand things

that aren't literal, such as " It's raining cats and dogs " ....she runs

to look out the windows for the cats and dogs falling out of the

sky. But that's okay too...we're working on those gray areas.

I hope that you do get to move out of Georgia soon and get more hours

and more therapies. Even if you don't get out, keep pushing for

them. That's how Katrina's gotten as far as she has...and she's

still in therapies twice a week and still gets habilitation hours.

It's great that your daughter has her twin as a role model for her

because even if she doesn't know it, she'll learn from her without

even trying.

You'll find this group to be very supportive, informative and

humorous! :)

Welcome!
