Guest guest
Well I'm proud of her too, participating in the play. I remember your post about last summer's play on mental health topics. Good for her, going despite her nervousness and anxiety. And glad they let you stay during rehearsals. Was a shy kid myself, so can understand wanting you nearby from that perspective. Looking forward to hearing how Sunday goes! Men! >> excited. She was nervous about the first one, but still did it. I was the only mom who stayed in the classroom, though... DD says things like - she doesnt know the people putting on the play, so doesnt trust them, so doesnt want me to leave her. Anyone else's child this way?? Anyways, she is in the play Sunday, is excited and nervous. We have to be at the local Children's museum (where they are performing) ALL day. Wish us luck!! I will report back how it went!! (sadly, dh chose to go hunting for the full weekend, so wont be watching her. she is VERY disappointed, as am I.) > > Sharon > > >
Guest guest
Good for her!!!! I recall you mentioning it back then too. Wretched OCD, always lurking, always looking for something new to latch onto. I hope she is able to put her worries aside and enjoy the experience. BJ > > My dd is 10 yo, has ocd/anxiety. Some of you may remember my mentioning last summer she had tried out for a play (which was a disaster, her anxiety was at an all time high and came into play BIG time at the audition). She got into a smaller version of the play and is performing this Sunday! It is a series of plays about children's mental health disorders. She will be in a play about schizophrenia. She has had rehearsal, where they learned more about schizophrenia. Of course, leaving rehearsal, she says " Now I am worried I will get it. " We talked about how it is rare, it usually doesn't show up until people are older, and is VERY uncommon in children. Other plays are about ocd, anxiety, adhd, tourettes, etc. Since it is so rare in children, they still wanted to do a play about it because, when asked about mental health disorders, most people mention schizophrenia, but cannot explain what it is. She has practice again tonight and is > excited. She was nervous about the first one, but still did it. I was the only mom who stayed in the classroom, though... Guest guest
The play was yesterday and she did WONDERFUL! I could not be more proud! It went so well. We were there ALL day, from 9:30 to 4:30 and NO melt downs! I was shocked. There were times she had to be with the staff and other kids in the play, and not with me (couldnt even be in the same room) and she did great. NO anxiety at all! As soon as she got home, she started writing her own play - about a girl with anxiety.  It was such a wonderful experience for her. Guest guest
Thanks. I told her I NEVER could have done that as a child, not even as an adult! she had to sing, too! She memorized all her lines, the songs, etc. The morning of, she said she was a little nervous, but mostly excited. When she found out her part (a very small part), she cried for an hour that she didnt get the lead. She is 10, one of the youngest in the play, most of the others were high schoolers. Later, she said she was glad she didnt have a big part, that would have been something to worry about! She was happy with herself, we were so proud of her. Guest guest
Oh, had to sing, plus memorize part. That'd cause me anxiety too. Guest guest
We had teacher conferences and report cards this week. My 10 yo dd has ocd/anxiety and is in 4th grade. Other than the beginning of the school year, she has done great. Her report card looks wonderful, her conference went equally wonderful. I know it is not easy being her and she deals with a lot that other kids don't. I am so proud that she can do as well in school as she does. She is in the highest math and reading groups and consistantly scores in the high 90th percentiles on her national testing. And she just won a writing contest for her classroom. She is amazing and I am proud to be her mom. Sharon
Guest guest
Sharon, brag away, it's so easy to let OCD get all the attention with our kids. It's great when we can celebrate and give attention to their successes. And you're right, OCD doesn't disappear when they're at school, it's there all day and they are dealing with it. Hope she's proud too! > > We had teacher conferences and report cards this week. My 10 yo dd has ocd/anxiety and is in 4th grade. Other than the beginning of the school year, she has done great. Guest guest
Thanks! She is proud. She always got low marks in gym class because of basketball. She has a hard time dribbling a ball. Well, this time she practiced and tried really hard and figured it out! She got a great mark in gym and was thrilled! The perfectionist in her was at work there. Sharon ________________________________ To: Sent: Monday, March 5, 2012 6:47 PM Subject: Re: proud  Sharon, brag away, it's so easy to let OCD get all the attention with our kids.
