Guest guest
Hi , welcome! I'm glad you were able to find someone to see your daughter so soon and already start meds. Let us know how Tuesday goes. So do you think having the anxiety that often goes with knowing " school is starting " and then the first day, etc., had anything to do with her OCD? Did this start suddenly or had she already been having thoughts for months and it just now worsened?? I think thoughts are sooo hard! My son with OCD/Aspergers has the scrupulosity type of OCD and is consumed with thoughts. No meds, his choice. The scrupe began later in high school, has been pretty bad at times (short story, lol) but he seems to have..adjusted? to it; he's managed. Still has the thoughts. We talked about it over time, but he isn't one to be open about what he thinks. I also have had those same type thoughts since a teen, on and off, more " on " since he started. But for me I can shrug them off, always knew what they were; or maybe just that I haven't had the actual " disorder " so it's not so intense/consuming like with our kids. But have had a bit of " counting " as a teen, a little " germ " thing later...just seem to be able to work myself past it; unlike our kids. I hope your daughter feels a little " relief " at knowing this is OCD causing this. Has she any interest in reading about OCD and thoughts? She may need to increase her Zoloft, dose range for OCD is 50 to 200mg; hopefully the 50mg will bring some relief, but at least she has room to go up if needed. If her OCD interferes with school a lot, you may want to see about getting her an IEP or a 504 Plan to help with accommodations due to OCD causing problems at school or with being able to do schoolwork, etc. Glad you found our group, single mom, 3 sons , 23, with OCD, Aspergers, dysgraphia; BS in Biology and job-hunting! > > My name is . I just found out 2 1/2 weeks ago that my 15 yr.old daughter has OCD. We have been through about a month of stress, exhaustion and heartbreak. She saw a psychiatrist and was put on 50 mg of Zoloft. Same medicine I started on as well when I was 17. Her OCD came out of no where. I could identify with it because I have had

Guest guest
Hi Chris! Thank You for the warm welcome. I have three girls I was a single mom until about 6 years ago. I've been married now for 3. I'm happy to have my husband help me with my daughter. She actually considers him to be her father. The Zoloft is not helping much, but she has only been on them 2 weeks tomorrow. I have a feeling the dose will be going up. She was actually excited about school starting(a distraction)-she's so driven-part of the OCD and everything has to be perfect-another part of OCD. We had no idea it was OCD until we started educating ourselves and putting everything together. We believe this started when she was younger. She has told us thoughts and issues she had when she was younger but was afraid to tell us. Worried we would think something was wrong with her..etc. I have already filled out the info for the 504 and returned it. She goes to a very small school(150 kids all together for 7-12th grade). We are close with all the teachers-there is only 7 of them. We had talked to them prior to school starting. Our first meeting is next week.I feel lucky that she's in the school she is in. She has obsessive thinking .... it scared her at first and once we had a diagnoses she read on it and felt a little better but then she had to quit because she started having thoughts about the information she was reading and this became obsessive. She's waiting for the teen yahoo group to accept her. Thank You for this group. I've learned quite a bit from the info you have on here in the files. Blessings, > > > > My name is . I just found out 2 1/2 weeks ago that my 15 yr.old daughter has OCD. Guest guest
Welcome, and ((()))hugs. This is a great place to be even if you would never choose to be here. My son was diagnosed at about the same age even though on looking back he had symptoms before that. I remember the early days and how scary it all was. My son has been on Zoloft since the beginning-he got up to 200mg but he is in the process of tapering that down and it's going well. Ask lots of questions of the therapist. I wrote a post today about attending the IOCDF conference and my takeaways from that about seeking therapy. Post questions here when you feel stuck. I think we all feel that way at times, at least I know I do. Good luck.
Guest guest
There is a hereditary component so the possibiity is there. I would say 3/4 of my kids, my dh and myself all have OCD in some degree but not to the extent of Roy. So your 3 r. old may also have it but irt may be expressed differently or varying intensity. Little ones also learn by modeling so she also may be picking up some things from the 7 yr. od. Just a thought. The good thing is that you know alot about OCD now so you can help your 3 yr. old if she has signs. in WI Roy-17. OCD,GAD,Depression,ADD. > > > > > > > > My name is . Guest guest
Teachers have told me that they really appreciate knowing information about a student and as importantly, what things they can do to make it easier for the child to learn. I also tell them what the last teacher did that was helpful and ideally have them talk to the other teacher. They can still get to know them but simple things like setting up the seating chart, where to stand in the line, transitioning thru building all are helpful info. Most of the first days of school are spent on learning the routine so anything to make that easier is good. Roy-17. OCD, GAD, Depression, ADD > > > > > > > > > > My name is . Guest guest
It is best not to worry about " what may be " with regard to anything in life for which you don't have control. I seem to have been born with pretty severe OCD, yet none of my three siblings have it. On the other hand, both my children have it. I don't think it is predictable, so hope for the best while at the same time being realistic that there is a chance your second child may have OCD and it is something you could deal with if that turns out to be true. It affects my daughter's life more negatively than my son's life, so even if your second child were to have OCD, it doesn't mean that it would be to the same degree or even the same type of symptoms. As far as your other question, both my kids are very anxious about school restarting. School adds stress for most kids, and most kids don't look forward to it restarting after a long break, but for kids with OCD who already have anxiety about life, it can be quite anxiety producing. I always remind my kids that worry about the future wastes the present and we use distraction when they do. Re: Re: New here and wanted to say hello;) Hi- I'm so afraid that my 3 yr old daughter will also have OCD like my 7 yr old ....anyone have any thoughts on the sibling having OCD as well? Also my daughter has pretty much been OCD free all summer but if I even mention school I can see her get angry and anxious. I am so afraid to see that OCD come out again, but I'm thankful for a great summer without OCD running our house. Anyone have this experience with their child? Guest guest
I don't know how severe your child's OCD is. You say that it is important for her to know in case any accommodations need to be made. I'm not sure if by that you mean that her OCD isn't that bad at this point, but if you do, then there may no need to bring it up now. By 4th grade my daughter's OCD and compulsive hair pulling was out of control, so the school was aware of it anyway, and I needed to meet with them to work on ways to help her cope and to help them to understand why she was reacting the way she was. Thus, in 5th grade I met with the team of teachers at the start of school to make them aware of her issues, and I had the guidance counselor and school psychologist explain it to her team of teachers in 6th and 7th. On the other hand, my son's OCD isn't a big issue in school, so I basically describe his issues as " anxiety " and only go into it further when an issue comes up. I am hoping not to bring it up right away with the teachers this year, but since my daughter has the same guidance counselor this year, she may or may not do it anyway. Re: Re: New here and wanted to say hello;) Also what are anyone's thoughts on making the teacher aware of their childs OCD prior to their teacher getting to know him or her? I just don't want that to be he first thing the teacher knows about her but it's important for her to know in case any accommodations need to be made. Thoughts?
