Guest guest
I thought I would share a success my son had. He has OCD/Anxiety/Depression/ADD. He has had his share of struggles in HS and has gone back and forth about his dream to become an engineer. He struggles in math, does not test well, and has to put in alot of work in general. His tech teacher is a saint and has carried him through school in more ways imagined. He encouraged him to take a Principles of Engineering course, a PLTW course, meaning if he passes a test at the end, he actually gets college credit. He has not had Physics and only is in Alg 2 so the math part of the course has been a struggle. He does have good mechanical sense and figures things out somehow without the math/Physics. I didn't think he would pass the test, but I didn't really care since he loves the teacher and the subject material. He does not cram for tests b/c it increases his anxiety too much. Anyway, he took the test and passed. He and I couldn't believe it. His confidence is so much better. Now he wants to retake his ACT test and apply to a school that he didn't think he could handle. His teacher has been encouraging all along to consider this school and always believes in him, even with all of his quirkiness and different approaches to work. I wanted to share this because when we were in the thick of his anxiety/OCD, it was so hard on us. Hopefully, other people will see that it can get better. Guest guest
, how wonderful! And happy he's taken this success forward, with taking " risks " with taking ACT again and towards college; got that confidence now, YAY! had a special teacher like that in high school, so wonderful to have teachers like that! > > I thought I would share a success my son had. Guest guest
Roy has a pretty good sense of what teachers will work for him, very quickly. In his first week of freshman year, we switched him into this tech. teacher's homeroom. He always went there after school or whenever he had free time. Very encouraging and more importantly, saying " I respect your decision " when Roy would have to quit clubs/teams when his OCD/anxiety would sky rocket and prevent him from participating. Not a talkative guy and never responds to my e-mails but it must be that he is so steady and non-demanding/no agenda that Roy feels comfortable with him. Has loose deadlines on projects so he isn't set to fail (like some subjects, even with 504). Set him up in a work coop running the laser machine next year. Anyway, so thankful for all the tech teachers. Roy certainly would not still be in school without them. > > How wonderful!
