Trudy- My son has liked his therapists who did nothing too. Who wouldnt like

someone to sit around and play games with and not do anything hard? My son

HATED the therapist who helped him the most because guess what, they made him

WORK. A good therpaputic relationship is nice but not required for many people-

this is about tactics. It is like a good football coach- they dont necessarily

have to be your best friend, they need to know the game, have done it hunderds

of times before and be able to motivate you. YOu dont have to like em when

they make you run till you puke or some other such torture. YOu will pick one

that seems like the best fit and seems like they know what they are talking

about. The therapist should only take a couple sessions to " establish rapport "

and warm up to doing actual exposures. In those fist few sessions they should

be finding out what the worries and compulsions are and ranking them in a fear

hirearchy. Then getting down to work. No one likes getting down to work.

Especially not OCD. That is normal. If it doesnt work out, you move on and

look for the next one- follow your gut- you are lucky you have 4 people who at

least know enough about the disease to want to advertise on the OCF website. YOu

will find someone who works, and if you dont, you could consider scype therapy

if you can find someone who does that or intensive outpatient so that you can go

to an expert site then really learn what it should look like.

Thanks for all the information and support everyone.

I found 4 therapists close to me from the OCD foundation list so I'm hoping at

least one of them will work out for my daughter. It's very scary wondering how

I'm going to tell her that we need to see a new therapist because even though

our current one isn't addressing her OCD properly, he's a nice and compassionate

man. She really likes him personally, and I think it's very important that my

daughter like her therapist. I'm scared that I'll pick the wrong one and she'll

lose confidence altogether in trusting the profession to help her.

But your answers have helped and I now know what to look for.

Thank you!

Trudy
