Guest guest
IMO he seems very normal...my daughter was about 6 when she liked bugs and spent hours building houses for them outside. (No OCD diagnosis at this time) I wouldn't worry about it as long at's not disrupting his life for more than a couple days. Set parameters and stick to them, for example, no checking on the bugs after bedtime... Anyways, my 2 cents... >> To: From: sbrooks0505@... However, yesterday morning at church he was outside playing and started collecting rolly-polly bugs in a paper cup. I made him leave them outside during church and he went to check on them several times during the service. Got to my moms after church and he spent the ENTIRE TIME we were there collecting more. (minus a very short break to eat). Then we stopped at the store for a bug house thinking this was just a fun hobby for him. He is now obsessing over them. He got out of bed twice last night (which he very rarely does) to check on them and ask about the extra dirt I had for his bug house. Woke up early this morning and talked non stop about them. d them everywhere he went this morning. Lost one of them outside before school and left for school VERY upset by this. Is this just a kid being a kid? (he's 6) None of my other 3 kids have been THIS obsessed over something but I know all kids are different. Or does this seem related to OCD? Also how do I determine for sure that this is OCD? He has tourette's and I am afraid the other problems he is having are being called OCD because it so often goes along with tourette's and so they are making assumptions. We see a play therapist in a few weeks. Hoping she can shed some light on this.

Guest guest
This particular example isn't one of OCD from what I can tell. It sounds more like he has an obsessive interest in the bugs. Guest guest
Hi , What other symptoms does your son have that made him have the diagnosis of OCD. If the below example is the only thing going on with him I definitely would not be convinced of that diagnosis. To: From: Jordana120@... I actually posted about this earlier and still for some reason I am having a hard time completely agreeing with the dx. Here is what I posted about in the previous post: He may be coloring a picture and get out of the lines and have a melt down over it. Similarly if a paper he wanted to color is wrinkled it is like the end of the world. He will not color it and instead will cry and cry over it. The other day he had gotten a balloon after getting a hair cut. We got home and he lost his grip and the balloon flew away. He cried off and on for hours. We went somewhere else later that day and he got distracted. Then when we got back in the car that evening he remembered the balloon and started bawling again. A few days ago he was showing me a book he had made at school. He had colored a picture to represent himself in each month. For April (the month of the balloon incident) he had colored himself holding the balloon. When I asked about it he got very sad and explained it was from the balloon he got after his hair cut. He was still obsessing over it 2 weeks later. Enough to draw a picture about it. He just cannot seem to handle disappointment. And again this is not some kid throwing a tantrum because he doesn't get his way. I would not put that past a few of my other kids on occasion but that is just NOT his normal personality. I find myself wondering if I have the right shirt clean, the bowl he is going to want for breakfast... etc. It is exhausting. He is emotional about EVERYTHING. It also seems to wax and wane like the Tourettes. When he is having a " good bout " with his tourettes these other symptoms seem to be under control. But when the tourettes flares up so does the other. He is such a precious little boy. I want so desperately to help him but it would be easier to do if I knew what I was dealing with. So does this sound like OCD or something else? Everything I read about OCD just does not sound like this. Maybe I am just wanting it to not be OCD... I don't know! > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > This particular example isn't one of OCD from what I can tell. Guest guest
My first thought would not be OCD. I knew a kid like this, never labeled with anything and with time leather-ed up. Still a sensitive man, notices details others miss, sees colors in music kind of fellow, but no label. I wonder if entertaining his notions makes it worse or better? Must you worry about the clean shirt or breakfast bowl? Do you send the message that this is something to be upset about if you give attention to it? -JuLeah ________________________________ To: Sent: Monday, May 14, 2012 4:06 PM Subject: Re: VERY new to OCD, is this normal?  > > > Hi , What other symptoms does your son have that made him have the diagnosis of OCD. Guest guest
Hi , while the earlier post you wrote certainly sounds like OCD, this " bug collection " sounds more like a little-boy thing. Having raised 3 sons myself, they each would start a collection of something over the younger years. And they can certainly get " obsessed " with collecting but it's not an OCD-obsessed. Just my thoughts on this one new behavior. Just FYI, I cried buckets when my " pet " frog I'd caught and was keeping in a box outside got away a few days later (my brother let it go!). See, I'm 54 yrs and still remember that! > > My son was diagnosed with OCD. I am not 100% convinced that that is what is going on. Guest guest
I guess the reason I am having a hard time thinking it is OCD is because he does not do anything like hand washing, hoarding, checking. He did go through a phase where he was afraid to go to bed at night and would ask us multiple times at bed time if we had locked the doors. And two nights ago he told us that when it is dark he is afraid somebody is going to kill mommy and daddy. But he does not seem to have a compulsion he needs to do to fulfill an obsession. Does it just look different in younger kids? > > > > My son was diagnosed with OCD. I am not 100% convinced that that is what is going on. Guest guest
I think time will tell on this one. With Torrettes, you need to be thinking about it, but if this is a several day to a week thing that he gets obsessed with then fades away and never interferes with his life than it is nothing. If it begins expanding and starts causing problems, then it is likely OCD. The thing is, you will know for sure when it is truely abnromal and needs to be treated. You can still do exposures on it and set limmits with it even if it is not OCD ( usually works faster and is a whole lot less painfull if not OCD) but the theory is the same. Guest guest
, I don't know if the bug is OCD, but my son has OCD and he checks on our dog and his sister....their well being. He once got an inch worm and was checking constantly on it...until he killed it with all the handling. I think that checking to see if the bugs are okay, may be a form of OCD....especially if he is disrupting his sleep routine and cannot stop himself from checking on their well being. My son will get up in the middle of a game, eating or whatever to see if the dog is okay....he cannot stop himself. Of course, it may be a boy thing, but I would not rule out that it is checking. > > > > > > My son was diagnosed with OCD. I am not 100% convinced that that is what is going on. Guest guest
The getting out of bed to check sounds atypical, more than the typical kid interests. My ds' OCD is more thought than compulsion based. Also sounds like the checking is the compulsion here to his obsessive thoughts over the bugs. At the least it sounds like an outcrop of his OCD. Guest guest
, My 9 year old did some of the same things you've described when she was younger. These behaviors were short lived though, as were the hand washing and fear of germs. Her primary symptoms at this point include confessing about perceived indiscretions like stealing, lying, cheating. Along with the confessing, she asks for reassurance constantly that she has not done these things or has not broken any rules. I have found that these symptoms are less talked about in the literature and there are fewer examples to relate to. A good book that does a good job describing these type of obsessions and compulsions (confessing and asking for reassurance Mr. Worry. Someone else mentioned that this is the doubting disease and the obsessions and compulsions look different than the physical checking of locks and doors, washing hands b/c of a fear of germs, or counting. My daughter also incessantly asks questions about everything, even the most minute details. Some of this must be normal curiosity but my daughter's therapist says that it is really related to the discomfort with uncertainty and the doubting of whether she has heard something correctly or interpreted a situation correctly, etc. it can be confusing to know what is typical and where OCD begins. > > > > > > > > > Hi , What other symptoms does your son have that made him have the diagnosis of OCD. Guest guest
Yes, my son used to ask me questions that I knew he knew the answers for and then it dawned on me that this was a form of reassurance seeking. It is amazing the things that OCD causes a sufferer to do. For example, my son used to wake me up at like 5 am with some inane question every morning. I'm very laid back, so it didn't really bother me, and I would just go back to sleep. Then one morning it dawned on me that this was tied into his fear of me dying. He was scared that I wasn't really sleeping, but dead, and he had to ask me a question to hear me speak so that he could be reassured that I wasn't. VERY new to OCD, is this normal? > > > > > > > > My son was diagnosed with OCD. I am not 100% convinced that that is what is going on.
