Guest guest
Hi Jay, That is indeed great news, so happy to hear your son (and family) are doing so much better now. Sounds like the Zoloft has really helped a lot! I know how scary meds can be and I was very hesitant to put my son on meds, but when it gets to a certain point you just don't have a choice. I hope your son continues to progress and sounds like he is definitely on the right road! > Hi All, > > I have not been on this site in a while but I wanted to get back and give some positive feedback. Guest guest
That is great to hear. Even if you are not out of the woods, he can get his confidence back and better his skills so if he has trouble again, he and you are more able to handle the challenge. And, you never know, maybe the worst is behind you.. > > Hi All, > > I have not been on this site in a while but I wanted to get back and give some positive feedback. Guest guest
Jay, thanks for sharing, it's great to hear positive progress! Happy the Zoloft has worked so well for him. Hope he finds a therapist he can feel comfortable with/likes. Glad he is trying to work on things on his own some too, even just picking 1 thing to try " bossing back " is great, it takes *effort* and that counts! > > Hi All, > > I have not been on this site in a while but I wanted to get back and give some positive feedback. Guest guest
Thanks so much for sharing - so happy your son is experiencing relief and freedom; just building up confidence for awhile before tackling the OCD again can give everyone new faith and vision! Rhonda Some Positive News to Post Hi All, I have not been on this site in a while but I wanted to get back and give some positive feedback. My son was diagnosed with OCD last September - he is 10yrs old. It started out with general snxiety (not wanting to leave me,etc). We got him into therapy in Sept 2011 however his OCD hit the roof in January of this year and he was non-functional. Therapy alone was not working for him. The therapist suggested we go see a psychiatrist as she felt he needed " a leg up " with a combo of meds and therapy. My son was put on Sertraline (Zoloft) at 25mgs and the doage increased over the past several months. He is now on 150mgs, and WOW he is almost back to his old self. His compulsions are almost at zero and he is really trying to work this out on his own which I give him so much credit for. We are seeing a new therapist but my son is not responding to well to the theapy. We are still trying to find that right fit. The therapist said that my son might not be ready for ERP at this time however he feels he can benefit from being in therspy. Bottom line we are not out of the woods yet but there is hope. My son (and the family) have been thru hell and back and from where we are today it is a true blessing. Again, I feel it is important to share the good news when it happens as we tend to foget to do this when things start going well. I wish everyone the best, we sre all in this together. Guest guest
Thank you so much for sharing your positive update Jay. It encourages others to know how things can improve so dramatically. Your experience sounds very familiar. We waited three months before starting medication, our son also could no longer function, and could not do the ERP therapy, the anxiety was just too high. At one point our son was in counselling but not doing ERP, like your son, and it was at minimum a support for him, and I think it may have helped with insight. Unfortunately our son saw too many doctors who were not helpful, really didn't have expertise to treat severe OCD, and after two years of this he no longer believed any doctors would ever be helpful. As a result he will no longer see any doctor. From what I understand and hear from others this is not uncommon. So, if you can find someone your son trusts and believes they know what they are doing, this is critical - bottom line, someone with expertise! Hopefully this is the new therapist you have!! In the end our son never did formal ERP with anyone, but he had learned how it worked, since, like you we tried that first. I think this can be really important, because it teaches them that there is a way to manage the OCD. If they don't learn this and think the medication is going to be the answer, eventually it usually catches back up with them, ie the OCD grows again. So, to encourage you, our son did start doing ERP on his own, eventually. It is a process of their coming to understand they have to be the one to do it, with or without a doctor to lead the process. Now that the OCD/anxiety is dialed back, your son will be more able to do the ERP. From what you say it sounds like he is doing his best to figure it out for himself, this is everything! If he is open to using a workbook, March has a great one, not sure if it is too old for him or not. Or, What to do when your brain gets stuck, is for younger child, but easy to understand. You may already know about these, since you've been at it a while, just thought I'd mention. Hang in there. Medication plus ERP is the magic combo for many! Warmly, Barb > > Hi All, > > I have not been on this site in a while but I wanted to get back and give some positive feedback. My son was diagnosed with OCD > last September - he is 10yrs old.
