Guest guest
My son is 6 with hfa and OCD, anxiety and now p.a.n.d.a.s At first we were doing erp in the home wich worked for each behavior but then a new one would take its place. When he got pandas( pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with strep) his OCD went through the roof and he could not function and we started giving him clonidine at night just so he could get some sleep. He is on antibiotics which is bringing his OCD level down but still have alot of work to do. I wanted to wait till he was older before starting meds but he is suffering. The problem is with pandas u can't treat the same as straight OCD. If I were u I would rule out pandas first and then take him to an OCD psychiatrist or developmental pediatrician to get him on meds to ease his suffering. I had severe OCD when I was his age ( it got better but just changes forms over time) but with Prozac I can keep it under control. Also if he has an anxiety disorder like my son talk therapy is not going to work on its own. I would suggest cbt and erp along with meds. Just my opinion. It can get better! Guest guest
Hi Maree, I wanted to respond to your question about inositol. I would definitely suggest that you switch to powder. Your son would have to take too many tablets to get to a level that could help him. My son is 12 and has been using inositol successfully for a few years now. We use Source Naturals powder. Each 1/4 tspn is 845 mgs, and he gets 2 tspns a day right now. This is still considered a very low dosage to help OCD, at just under 7 grams a day. But it definitely helps his anxiety level. I purchase it online, as it is much cheaper that way. Your therapist should be using CBT and especially ERP to help with his OCD rituals and obsessions. They should build a hierarchy together and work on the lower anxiety-producing issues first, working up to the higher anxiety issues. When my son's OCD started up again last year, we found a wonderful therapist who worked with him in this way. It was very successful. He also used loop tapes to help him with his obsessive thoughts and worries. Most of his anxiety is about something happening to me. But he had read a book in school about a woman who got polio many years ago, and he started obsessing about getting it himself. Through the loop tapes, he was able to overcome this worry/obsession fairly quickly. With the right help, it can get better. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I agree with the other replies, but wanted to ask has the therapist given him " tools " to use at home regarding his anxiety? or even " homework " for his OCD? With , around that age he did " stand out " more with his Aspergers. I just noticed it more, the differences between him and the " typical " peers. And I don't mean just maturity, that differs with everyone, but more... " life skills " ? Or innocence? Ugh, can't really define *it*, but just more obvious than when at his younger ages. Do switch to the inositol powder. Easier to take and can get that dosage up for him! Buying online is best, cheaper than in local stores from what I could tell when we bought it. > > my 13 yr old son has extreme anxiety, and OcdRituals that can go on all day..........he also has aspergers to add to the confusion, we are trying inositol, have found tablets of 650mg,taking 3 a day but can see no improvement, in fact it seems OCDs are worse but that maybe stresses at school too, he is a large 13yr old,can we do more of these tablets? it says 1 to 3 on the bottle.........or has anyone found the powder more effective? > He
Guest guest
yes Chris......i know what you mean by standing out more, he seems different from his old friends now, sometimes in a subtle way and at other times hugely.....i worry he can be taken advantage of easily,as he has less awareness of this, and although he tries to hide the OCDs at school/outside when I am around they are v strong.....family who saw him this spring after a 6 month gap could notice the difference and how how he would not interacting so much with cousins his age, but more affinity with the younger ones now, i am learning more all the time, and have found a local group who meet specifically for children with ASC conditions, so onwards with that...any help and all that! thanks maree > > > > my 13 yr old son has extreme anxiety, and OcdRituals that can go on all day..........he also has aspergers to add to the confusion, we are trying inositol, have found tablets of 650mg,taking 3 a day but can see no improvement, in fact it seems OCDs are worse but that maybe stresses at school too, he is a large 13yr old,can we do more of these tablets? it says 1 to 3 on the bottle.........or has anyone found the powder more effective? > > He >
