Guest guest
Hi - This is Jen C. Our son has had OCD symptoms since age 4; (looking back). He was officially diagnosed 2 years ago at age 8. We tried CBT for 1 1/2 years. He kept getting worse. His Psychologist suggested we have him see a Psychiatrist for medication eval. Kind of tricky because he also has ADHD and Mood Disorder. I have heard they can be co-morbid. My husband, his father has Bipolar disorder with OCD tendancies. His OCD use to be germs/vomit, (for 5 years) but strangely that one " went away " and he became obsessed with a friend in his class. Does this happen? They trade one for another? October 25th he had a huge " breakdown " putting his hands around his neck turning very red to choke himself. He said he was going to kill himself if this girl stopped being his friend. We followed all the procedures. His Psychiatrist added a mood stabilizer (Serequel) and anti-anxiety (clonazepam) to the Prozac (5mg) and ADHD Med (Folcalin). He is doing better after a month of being on the new meds. Interestingly, 3 weeks to the day he had this huge break in school he developed his first (we thought) Strep throat infection. Every doctor has asked us if he had ever had Strep. We didn't think he did, but now looking back wonder if he had bouts of it when he was little that we didn't know about. His Psychiatrist said Which came first the chicken or the egg. He said we could ask the pediatrician to draw a " titer " for Strep antibodies. But when I contacted the pediatrician, she seemed to disregard it. I have also read that it doesn't really matter if the " titer " test is high, that some kids just run high. Do you guys have experience with OCD related to a friend. Them dropping one OCD and start a new one? We noticed the Prozac really activated him, but think the Serequel and Clonazepam is helping counter balance that. Would love to hear from you. Guest guest
My dd is 10 and was dx about 6 yrs ago. YES obsessions come and go VERY often. My dd always has something physical she does to her body (biting nails, picking face, picking head, biting fingers, etc) that changes, but she ALWAYS has something she is doing (currently it is picking her head, she has little scabs on her scalp from it). Her fears come and go just as frequently. She is doing REALLY well right now and does not have an obsession at the moment. But, she has a knee injury (fell ice skating a couple of weeks ago and is in a full leg brace) and her mind is focused on that. We just lost our dog last night, so now I am worried about how that will effect her OCD.
