Actually, L-Carnosine can be very beneficial for intractable seizure

disorders. It is thought to bind with GABA to form homocarnosine in

the brain and may also modulate copper and zinc influx into the

neurons decreasing the after-discharges and spike-wave discharges

associated with many seizure disorders. This may decrease the

frequency of clinical seizures and, in some cases, improve EEG patterns.

Kassiane, are you taking your large carnitine dosage in response to a

carnitine deficiency created by Depakote or Tegretol? Just curious :-)

Learn somethin' new every day. Cool. I'll need to look

into that, I think at one time it was thought it

aggrivated seizures or something but amino acids are

weird.

My carnitine dosage isn't because of my meds (that we

know of), I'm allergic to Tegretol and they don't want

to Go There with me and Depakote...I take Topamax,

Neurontin, Keppra, and clonazepam (trying to get off

the last one). AFAIK none of these has much of an

effect on serum carnitine but I tested quite low, so

my docs had me add 200mg/day/2weeks till the benefits

leveled off or I hit their ceiling (which I didn't but

I'm only like 200mg off or something).

I think both carnosine and carnitine *can* cause or aggravate

seizures in some people under certain circumstances. It's just the

nature of things in the brain. So much we don't know...
