Guest guest
Hello, my son is on prozac and abilify for his ocd. It is the first combination that has worked..though definately not cured. He still makes random noises because " he has to get them out " and he is back to asking me if i love him constantly. This is much better than the constant intrusive thoughts he was having and the constant hand washing. Ugh.

Guest guest
Hi , I'm in Oak Park. My son takes Prozac for OCD and Adderall for ADHD. The Prozac has made a huge difference with tapping/counting and fear of death. We have a psychiatrist for meds and have seen two different therapists in Oak Park for behavior issues--we just switched from his psychologist to a LSCW a couple weeks ago. She seems great so far. Also, I don't know if you're still doing OT, but there's a place called Kid's Unlimited here that specializes in kids with sensory problems. They hold a casual support group at La Majada the first Tues of every month--I've found it very helpful, especially when you're feeling stressed out. If you live near Oak Park and you'd like the names/numbers, send me an email.
Guest guest
Thanks for your input, . I'm in the Hinsdale/Oakbrook area. I wonder if there's a similar organization near me. We're trying to get him an OT in the school, but I realize I may have to go outside of the system. We're going to the psych this weekend to discuss alternative meds for his OCD. Maybe Prozac is worth a try. He's on Intuniv for ADHD but it's outrageously expensive, and he's refusing to take the " big " 2 mg. pill. We may try the generic guanfacine even though it's not long-acting. We're not able to put him on stimulant meds because his weight is so low. > > Hi , > I'm in Oak Park. Guest guest
Right now, my son is not obsessed with cleanliness/hand-washing. It's primarily counting and thoughts about " having " to do something that he can't control. I've heard that in the future, blood tests will be able to determine which medication will work with your individual chemistry. I wish the future were now and that we didn't have to turn our children into human guinea pigs. It's helpful to hear the experiences of other parents. Thank you for your input. > > Hello, my son is on prozac and abilify for his ocd. It is the first > combination that has worked..though definately not cured. Guest guest
Hi , I live in Plainfield (SW suburbs). My 10-year-old daughter was diagnosed in early September. She is not taking meds, so I don't have anything to offer in that regard. We have been seeing a LCPC in Naperville; if you'd like her contact info, please email me. I've found the outbursts to be really unsettling, especially because my daughter is normally a pretty laid back kid. I've been reading " What to Do When Your Child Has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder " (which is on the recommending reading list for this list). I found this passage to be a valuable reminder: " The more unlovable your child acts, the more he needs your love and understanding. Remind yourself, especially when upset, that what you are seeing is not your child, it's OCD playing havoc with your child. If you can separate the two, you'll be able to keep the perspective you need to help your child. You must stay calm, focused and in charge. " Take care, > > Hi! I'm . My son is a twin who was born prematurely. He's had developmental delays since birth, and has in the past received OT (sensory) services in the home. > > Over the summer, he began to touch the ground repeatedly, and make short humming noises. We had him evaluated by a psychologist who diagnosed OCD (as well as ADHD). We're experimenting with medications right now to treat both the OCD and ADHD symptoms. Currently, he is taking 2 mg Intuniv for ADHD (and that is helping him to focus) but we weaned him off Sertraline because we did not think it was very effective. > > Although, now that he is off Sertraline, his OCD behaviors (counting, the uncontrollable urge to stand up, biting himself, defiance and rage) are escalating. I realize that medication effectiveness varies by individual, but I'm wondering if there are any parents of elementary school age children who have had success with a particular anti-depressant. > > Also, we are actively looking for a psychologist in the western suburbs of Chicago. Anyone local to the area who can share their experiences? > > Thanks. I'm extremely stressed out about this because I feel like I don't know how to handle his meltdowns/outbursts of rage when he doesn't get his way. Any support would be very much appreciated. >

Guest guest
Hi , I'm so glad to hear that you found someone. My fingers are crossed that it's a good match. I'm not sure that who we are working with is quite the right fit, but the ERP she's doing with my daughter seems to working fairly well at least. I think it's easy to feel helpless and hopeless when trying to support your child with this, especially when you realize that you've done something that isn't as supportive as it could have been. Try not to beat yourself up. The important thing is that you are taking action and getting your son the behavioral therapy he needs. Good luck and keep us posted! > > > > > > Hi! I'm .
