Hello Friends,

My daughter, now 14, was diagnosed with OCD when she was 12 years old.  She

began weekly treatments at the University of Minnesota, but she didn't progress

with her exposures.  In February of 2011 her anxiety went completely out of

control and she was locked in a bh unit off and on, and finally she was

transferred to a residential program for a complete 45 day assessment.  She was

diagnosed with OCD, General Anxiety Disorder (GAD), ADHD, and a sleep disorder

that caused vivid and horrific nightmares.  That was a year ago.  She has since

been diagnosed with all of the above and PTSD.  She received outstanding

treatment for her OCD at , and now she is getting treatment, a different

kind, for self-harm caused by her GAD and her PTSD.

The problem, in addition to the above?  She's been in residential treatment

programs for over a year because no program can treat all of her problems.  Now

her OCD is coming on strongly and she is in the wrong place to keep that in

check.  SO, I am wondering if you have heard of any great on-line OCD programs

that she could access in her current residential program?  Or, if any of you

know a bh specialist in the Chicago area that could meet with her regularly to

help with exposures?  She's at Timberline Knolls in Lemont, IL.

Thanks for your help.  You, the front-line parents, are amazing.

Judy

Gosh, hate that you've not been able to find a center to cover all her

challenges!

Hi Judy,

Sure hope you are looking after yourself through all of this! A very long haul

for both of you. Sending you many hugs!!

I'm thinking you've probably already done this, but have you asked if

they could recommend someone for you? I'm also wondering if they don't have the

ability to work with all of this, thought they were quite comprehensive. Or

perhaps another residential facility that specializes in OCD, if you check the

ocfoundation website.

One other thought. Not sure what medications are being used, but just want to

mention. Our son had self harming compulsions start when an atypical was added

to ssri. I read after some literature/studies(?), that found some people are

more compulsive on these meds. Just a thought. Hope you have expert doctor/s

for the medication piece.

One last offering....if you are open to an alternative idea to help bring your

daughter back to herself, so she can better deal with all the other stuff, email

me privately. I will share something with you that we did for our son, that I

know made the difference for him. The experiences of treatments that were not

helpful, hospitalizations, and just living with unremitting OCD/anxiety, caused

trauma in itself, that needed to be healed. Hard to know where one thing ends

and another begins when so much going on. We felt we lost our son and needed

help getting him back from under all the disorders.

Hang in there. I hope you have good support around you. Don't forget we are

always here.

Hugs,

Barb
