Guest guest
Hi , making sure I understand - it's only been 3 days since lowering Zoloft; but he's been having the behaviors since school ended. So was anything new at all since lowering the Zoloft? You did say it may be having a negative effect, why you're weaning him off, so assuming some of this may have started after beginning Zoloft? Had he tried any other SSRIs before Zoloft? Might try switching him to another.... I don't have a lot of knowledge about Risperdal's effects. I know it is used with behavior issues, also can be used with an SSRI due to bipolar/other (if BP then need Risperdal type med with an SSRI). But don't know if Risperdal can cause behaviors like you mentioned. How long has he been taking meds? Too long (since young) to know how he is off all meds? Just thinking if it is med related, wondering if anything might stand out as to when he began a med or dose change & when some " behavior " started.... Oh, got to be scary when they talk like that with threats and/or have a weapon. Only thing I can think of in that situation is to call the police. Let him know you will. Others here have experience with that. Wish I could offer you some solid advice/guidance! Don't worry about length of posts, feel free to write whatever you need, a good place to just vent too! ((hugs)) > > My 9yr old son, anxiety, OCD, aspergers ( or PDD depends who you talk to) he is > on .50 ( doc wants to raise it to .75) of Risperdal, 25 mg of zoloft( was 50mg) > and 2mg meletonin. Guest guest
So sorry, , there are more of us on here that have OCD in son and anger with dad. One thing that made a tremendous difference for my son . . . if there's anywhere you can have your son go for a week or two just to have a break from Dad, especially somewhere they will love on him and help him talk about his feelings, give him structure and safety, fun activities etc. Don't know if you have a relative where this could happen, but getting my son out of our home was a huge step. He was in a regular hospital psych unit for two weeks but it thankfully was one where there was a ton of support among the kids and staff, and they did coping skills and group activities every day, plus meeting with psychiatrist and working with meds. He was able to learn some skills and also get the right meds, plus have ERP right there in the unit, to where he could come home and have some confidence about dealing with dad. I know how crazy your life is - you deserve better and so does your son. ((hugs)) Rhonda tapering off zoloft My 9yr old son, anxiety, OCD, aspergers ( or PDD depends who you talk to) he is on .50 ( doc wants to raise it to .75) of Risperdal, 25 mg of zoloft( was 50mg) and 2mg meletonin. He is tapering off Zoloft from 50mg to 25mg for a month then off. His doc and I both thought it want doing anything or having a negative effect. Guest guest
He has been on these meds since he was 6 at least 3 years if not more. Same doses as well. I can't really tell if anything is med related./ We are trying to get him on another ssri but first he has to get off this and don't know if he is gettting even MORE aggressive than he was. It has been building all summer it seems so I just don't know. His doc does not believe children can be bipolar (sigh) he is a good doc but I dont agree with that ( also he is the best we can get with community mental health-others are much worse, not as educated). > >> > How long has he been taking meds? Guest guest
Right now I am thinnking of whetherit would be best not to have dad there but change and my son do not mix so I dont know. With his insurance I dont know if he could get admitted to a psych hosptial and we only have one. My parents are 82 and cannot have him overnight ( lots of anger in that house too). No other relatives. He has no friends and my friends who have kids all work all week:( Really good suggestion though. Hadnt thought of that before. He is soooo attached to me I dont know how he would do. > > So sorry, , there are more of us on here that have OCD in son and anger with dad. Guest guest
, I am so sorry that you are going through this. It sounds like this may be unrelated to OCD and more to the other issues you bring up, i.e. rages and domestic violence he has witnessed. If you think the situation is becoming unsafe either for your son, yourself, or both of you, you may need to have him evaluated at an emergency room. Hang in there and vent here all you need. tapering off zoloft My 9yr old son, anxiety, OCD, aspergers ( or PDD depends who you talk to) he is on .50 ( doc wants to raise it to .75) of Risperdal, 25 mg of zoloft( was 50mg) and 2mg meletonin. Guest guest
, it does sound like he needs some inpatient or IOP if he is threatening you. I know with my BP son who had psychotic break that was how i was able to get him in there, threat to self or others. Insurance especially pays when it is threat to self or others.Sounds like he is unstable with the med change too. Prob. needs more supervised place as they are trying to figure out meds. May need to take family medical leave from work just to deal with all of this, if you have this. I had to drive about 1 1/2 hrs. to find an IOP. It is hard finding treatment. Would not leave an unstable child with anyone unless experienced. My OCD son would say things like he wanted to stab me but it was not in a rage and it made him uncomfortable to say it, more OCD thought stuff. This sounds more like mood disorder stuff. The balanced mind support groups are very good, similar to this and have been helpful in dealing with my newly diag. BP son. The dad/son thing is hard. My dh has bp and can be a real trigger for my son's anxiety/OCD and for my other son's hypomania. Prob. with BP is lack of insight so dad may not even see where he triggers son. My dh would not get help but my OCD son pdoc was able to talk to him and convince him to get help. If there is domestic violence, domestic abuse shelter is helpful since they understand all of the complicated issues involved. I'm sorry you have to deal with this and hope you can find the right help. in WI roy-17. OCD/Anxiety/Depression, ADD ds-22. BP 1. > > ((hugs)) > > Rhonda > > > > > > tapering off zoloft > > > > > > > > My 9yr old son, anxiety, OCD, aspergers ( or PDD depends who you talk to) he is > > on .50 ( doc wants to raise it to .75) of Risperdal, 25 mg of zoloft( was 50mg) > > and 2mg meletonin. Guest guest
I was in same situation you are in - no relatives that could really help or take him in. We were able to qualify for Medicaid for son and that's what paid for the inpatient unit. Have you checked your income level to see if your son would qualify? I don't qualify, but son does, here in Ohio. We went to a Children's Hospital and got him into a unit that was proactive with therapy and worked with us on ERP. I was able to see son any time I wanted. Since Dad was biggest source of contamination fears, they worked with us on having Dad come onto unit. Son would not sleep in his room in the unit after Dad came into it, but they worked with him and worked with the meds until he was able to get past it. After release he went to a day program 2x week. Now seeing a therapist every couple weeks and doing well. But still issues with Dad. Because you're saying this has just started since school's out - do you mean he was fine as long as going to school? Could it be seasonal - pollen outside, allergies, etc? Or he might have been able to cope with Dad as long as he had the support and structure at school? Is there a YMCA he could get into where he'd have a schedule, a place to go, some other adults around? Is he okay out in public? Liz Lindley, who is going to speak at the OCD conference, has a son who sounds very similar to yours - his OCD ritual was confession - meaning he always had to tell her all the awful things he was thinking about doing to other people (even his siblings), and they had to hide the knives, etc. She and therapist worked with teaching him about OCD, then she began working on telling him she could not support his rituals - if he wanted to be violent, she would leave the house, giving him a choice about coming somewhere fun like Mcs, or doing the ritual. They also did hundreds of ERPs. Over time, he began having more ownership of his choices and more power over the OCD. Is your therapist helping you with the OCD? I know it's not easy and can feel like you're the world's worst mom, you're not, just keep fighting. Don't let the OCD get to you!
