Hi to all. This is my first post. I am thankful that this group exists, it has

made me feel that I am not alone I am looking for a new psychiatrist or

therapist in Santa , CA or in West Los Angeles. My son, n is 10 y/o

and has OCD and intermittent explosive disorder. His current psychiatrist has

prescribed medication which has provided some help. After working with n

for two years the talk therapy has become ineffective. I have been given a few

referrals, but am reluctant to choose one unless I know that he or she has had

success with OCD patients. Can anyone that is happy with their therapist help?

Thank you,

I dont know anyone in your area but when interviewing you should ask them how

they treat OCD. If they answer anything except CBT/ ERP dont waste your time.

Also discuss how many children that age with OCD they have treated. You could go

on the OCF website to see if you can find someone who at least THINKS they

specialize in OCD enough to list on the site. Good luck

I am glad that you are switching therapists from a talk one to one that will

help your son battle OCD with the proven techniques, namely cognitive behavior

therapy with exposure and response prevention. Many therapist say they do the

CBT, but I think it is a buzz word to them because they don't actually do any

ERP. You may find that with proper ERP, your son's temper will diminish greatly

because he will no longer feel the need to keep tight control over things and

then get mad when it doesn't happen.
