OCD and Ice Cream

Over the 5-6 years we have been dealing with OCD in my now 11 year old is that

OCD often jumps in to keep him from having fun. We often don't recognize it at

first, but if it seems very strange ( like a kid not wanting ice cream ?!?!?)

and goes against their normal idea of a good time - I always suspect OCD. One of

the most striking and odd times was when he didn't want to play soccer with his

team as his OCD was making him imagine a Knight fight and he couldn't

concentrate. Otherwise we squabble every time before karate although as soon as

he is on the mat he is happily in the martial arts zone.

These are the moments I most hate OCD - when it takes my child's joy of life

away. These are the times when we put on our big parent pants and say yes you

are going to karate, etc. With an ice cream situation (knowing what I know now)

I would have gone in to get a cone and allowed him to eat on the curb or in the

car. ( What parent ever imagined having to say " Eat this ice cream and like

1t! " )

Above all OCD is tricky stuff and for the most part only affects brainy kids. I

guess that is to help us keep our parent brains flexible as we get older :)

has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. She seems to have an

incredible self-destructive edge to her: for example, she is in a residential

treatment program and she is told if she runs she won't be able to come home for

Christmas, so she runs away every day; she is told that she is not to have

relationships there, so she announces that she and her roommate are going out

(she has a boyfriend at home); she is told she is pretty and could model, so she

cuts her face. It is bizarre, and obviously very unhealthy and dangerous.
