Or, if you are on a low-fat/low-carb diet (I have seen sooo many people make this mistake - including myself, and I wasn't a dieter!), it can happen. Theoretically it could happen even though you consumed fat or carbs, if they are not enough for your energy demands. Honestly, I would think that insulin production in response to protein is learned by being in protein burning mode too often. If the body never needed to make glucose out of protein, why would it know to release insulin? Is there an easy way to tell if you have switched to protein burning mode? (Mastering Leptin talks about a smooth, gliding feeling to muscles when exercising in fat burning mode.) I used to fall into a low-fat/low-carb diet because I got these bouts of anorexia where I didn't really want to eat anything but meat (could be because the carbs were refined and the fats were hydrogenated and rancid). Eventually, that got me sick cause I wasn't eating much Vitamin A (or D, or E and I certainly wasn't intaking enough fat to metabolize them). The longer I eat NT, the more my body begins to crave different foods during these bouts. At first it was just stock I wanted with my protein. Now the low-fat instinct is dying off the more I focus on good fats (I guess I got toxic from PUFAs, hydrogenated and trans fats). Now that my body is re-familiarized with Saturated fat: I now go into a saturated fat kick instead of a protein kick. I think my body is finally understanding what it actually needs and it is getting much better at asking for it. On a side note, I get so frustrated when I need foods I used to eat in huge amounts as a kid, but stopped because they were " bad " . I guess that really puts a new meaning to " Ignorance is Bliss.
