Most won't even notice. The major media has virtually stopped reporting on the war on terror. Most people don't realize that the number of attacks on US troops has been skyrocketing, particularly in Afghanistan, from a few hundred per year to several thousand. The number of casualties has likewise shot up into the thousands. Being completely cynical I would say it is pure politics. Under Bush the media couldn't report enough bad news about the war, even if they had to make it up. Under Obama, even good news is no news.

Then again, so much bad that is happening is being ignored while the media focuses on Sheen and personal tragedies like missing kids and the like.

Exactly my point. Things will jump up and kick people in the teeth before long. They won't know what hit them and won't want the best solution but most will be screaming for a handout NOW!!

I can't exactly say I blame them there though. A great percentage of people in this country have been duped for decades by the government through the handout programs and they went along. Others have been badly educated by schools were a new report says 82% are failing, the schools that is.

The only bad thing is that so many will look to the very government that caused these problems for help rather than demanding return to honest government.

I'll agree with you on this point. However, since the Department of Education was made a cabinet post, quality of US education has collapsed. Uninvolved parents, welfare, slacker and fame obsessed culture have all had effects as well. However, it is undeniable that as more money has been dumped into the public education system, the more it has failed. A large part of that failure has been policy from on high to drop things like phonics in favor of "whole language" and other methods that don't work. The emphasis on self-esteem above all hasn't helped either. It would probably also help to require teachers to first have a basic degree in the subject they wish to teach and THEN go to teacher school to get a certificate to teach.

I do not buy into this portion of your argument. School is like college. What you take away from it is what you put into it. So is everything else in life as far as education goes.

Just to comment on this part, find a copy of the Mcguffey readers that were used to teach reading, math, etc. Its not easy material for the age range, particularly by today's standards. If they kept that kind of basic education and kept refining reading skills beyond effectively fourth grade level, but kept on building the reading skills to into better comprehension, analysis and retention, that the rest of school would be much easier. This could easily be done by starting right after basic skills are mastered, probably by about 4th grade. Not all students would get it, but most would, certainly the best students would.

Compare this with the one room schools of the 1800s and how the only person who had a textbook was the teacher. Many students came out of those schools more educated than some do today.
