Forty Irish citizens are there waiting to be flown home. They are part of the estimated 1.5 million foreign nationals scrambling to leave the country in the wake of the crackdown by the Gaddafi regime. Today Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini said as many as 1,000 people may have been killed in the violence there as the dictator seeks to keep a grip on power. Last night, a defiant Col Gaddafi vowed to fight to his " last drop of blood " as the chaos in the country escalated. The Department of Foreign Affairs has advised against all travel to Libya and warned Irish citizens who are already in the country to leave.
