A big mistake our legal system made was getting away from the idea of restitution. Now and then someone might be made to pay victims back for the damage and other losses they caused. This should be more common, particularly for non violent crimes. in this case, that house could be sold and the proceeds given to the young man. Then, the woman can live in an apartment while she works and much of her income is garnished to pay back the balance, plus a fixed punitive amount. Its true it the money might not ever completely be paid back, but it would serve as a deterrent for many.

Of course there would have to be safeguards and rules for restitution to avoid the lottery mentality that exists in the civil courts. Indeed for most cases legal restitution could replace court cases and greatly reduce the tort nightmare that exists in this country.
