Some of these quakes have been in the vicinity of the hot springs. Hot springs mean there is some kind of magma activity not far below the surface. Hot springs can sometimes release CO2 and other gasses that can kill trees or even animals if the concentration is high enough. Perhaps there was a leak into the stream where the fish were killed? Harder to say about the birds.
