This country has been a basket case for decades. It and Sierra Leon have been one gang fighting over the natural resources and power since they gained independence. That is a trend that is unlikely to change. Corruption in government is rife so much so that if a person enters government service as a commoner, within weeks they are driving imported luxury cars, at least according to a documentary I saw that was made about 5 years ago. A lot of the bribes come from letting Russian and Chinese factory fishing ships fish their waters without limit or regulation. Some of these ships have been found to be using what amounts to slave labor by not paying workers and keeping them in terrible conditions.
