Guest guest
The Pakistanis are playing both sides here. The ISI has long been known to support radical Islamic forces. During the Russian Invasion of Afghanistan, the US sent lots of money and aid covertly to help the Muj. This went through the ISI which funneled assets toward the more religiously radical elements rather than those which were most effective at fighting the Russians. So while incompetent but religiously correct groups would get all the goodies, the groups that were actually doing harm to the Russian got little or nothing. It is also known that Pakistan is helping terrorist groups that are attacking India. At the same time they are almost certainly aiding the Taleban against the US in Afghanistan. The unfortunate thing is that as long as we are trapped in Afghanistan, we have to keep friendly relations with Pakistan. Really we should pull out of Afghanistan and let those chips fall where they may and lay the play on the UN for running away several years ago and giving up the nation building project. We should then drop Pakistan and cut all foreign aid and focus on India instead. It probably also wouldn't hurt to keep a ballistic missile sub fully loaded and ready to go in the Indian Ocean in case Pakistan gives some of its nukes to terrorists to use against the US or whoever else. They recognized quickly that there was no real way to organize a group of tribes and make them agree on a political system. We can leave Afghanistan anytime we want and should. The country will dissolve into chaos and become a religious extremist nation, but that is not our problem. That was what the country was before we invaded. If that's what they want, that is what they can have. I agree that we should support India instead of Pakistan, however, there are problems there too. They've had independence for many years but have done little to improve themselves. They would become problematical if the money stopped flowing.
