I remember grackles from Ontario. Mosquitos are a concern for spreading West Nile Virus in many areas. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/wnv_factsheet.htm More about bats; http://www.nationalatlas.gov/mld/bat000m.html

North American Bat Ranges Where 45 species of bats are found. (see web page for map)Sample Map Bats are flying, nocturnal mammals of the order Chiroptera, and are found on every continent except Antarctica. They are important pollinators and seed carriers and are critical to many ecosystems. Most bats eat insects, although there are also flower-feeding bats and bats that eat fruit, blood, meat, or fish. There are 45 known species of bats in North America, many of which are threatened or endangered. This map layer was compiled by Bat Conservation International, using data drawn from U.S. State natural heritage programs, Canadian conservation data centers, published literature, unpublished reports, museum collections, and personal communications from university, Federal, State, and local biologists. Bat Conservation International is active in conservation, education, and research initiatives involving bats and the ecosystems they serve, and

it works to protect and restore bats and their habitats worldwide. The North American Bat Ranges data set shows our current understanding of the distributions of the 45 United States and Canadian bat species and includes ranges that extend into Mexico. Descriptive information includes the scientific name and common name for each bat. Further information on bats is available from the Bat Conservation International home page and from the North American Bat Conservation Partnership page.

Fewer birds and bats will mean more bugs and more bugs mean higher crop losses. Its like around hear. Grackles have turned up in large numbers this year. Not only do they cause tens of millions of dollars of crop damage, but they also chase off or kill sparrows and other ground birds. They've been here a bit over a month and the sparrows have been gone almost as long. Since then, the number of spiders has really picked up, particularly some large crawling hunter types. Not only have they been outside but I've killed a few inside the house, more so far this year than in the last 5 or 6 and they are big. Never had that problem when the sparrows were around in numbers.

Unfortunately the grackles are a federally protected migratory species, which is really strange since they are a pest species that wrecks crops, raids other bird nests for eggs and kills other species.

You can expect the bug population to go up if that happens.Administrator

" I remember grackles from Ontario. "

We get them in Illinois. They tend to bully the smaller birds.

West Nile can be dangerous. My old dentist was infected by it and was up until

that time the oldest patient to survive it. It caused long term damage and took

a while for him to recover though.
