Karzai is looking at the recent Taliban offensive and the upswing of violence in the country, something that isn't being reported by the US media. Things aren't going well over there in Afghanistan. Troop morale is low, casualties are creeping up and there is no end in sight. Indeed the troops know that Obama has been in talks with the Taliban for some time seeking a peace settlement of some kind. That just encourages the likes of the Taliban so they are pressing harder. The Taliban also sees the US is in trouble with Pakistan and a bit more pressure and maybe that relationship will go bust. If the US gets the boot from Pakistan, then Afghanistan will fall as well.

Karzai himself is quite corrupt as is his family. No great surprise there given the history of top leadership in Afghanistan. Karzai also wasn't the best choice for president but he had the political pull to wrangle the office. Several over men would have been much better but because they lacked the manipulative skills or were "outsiders" meaning certain minorities in Afghanistan, they lost out.
