As bad as all this seems, Islamic radicals in Syria have tried to carry out massacres against Christians and others in the not so distant past. Assad's father had to use great force to stop the massacres, something that brought a long period of domestic peace, by Middle Eastern terms. If Assad goes, I suspect that there will be fresh massacres with no one to stop them.
