(Newser) – A magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook the Greek island of Crete yesterday,

shaking buildings as far away as Egypt and Israel and sparking panic in Turkish

resort cities. Police on the island say they had no reports of damage or

injuries, AP reports. " It was a strong earthquake in a region that is in the

eastern section of area known as the Aegean Arc, " a Thessaloniki professor of

seismology says. " This is a very seismically active area that has seen more

powerful quakes in the past. We are monitoring the post-earthquake activity,

which so far is not intense. "

I posted a while back a chart showing the frequency of quakes of different intensities. Up to 200 of 6 magnitude quakes can be expected in a given year along with 20 or so 7's.
