Guest guest
The thing here is that the radiation levels they were reading at the time of this statement were from the early stages of the event. Levels from even the first explosion had not yet reached the US mainland. That should be arriving around Monday according to reports I have seen. Levels from following blasts will arrive later in the week. It seems to big concern now are the storage pools containing spent fuel. Since there really is no program for disposing of this stuff it and other wastes pile up at the plants. It seems that they could pose a threat too if they begin to heat up. This is why opposition to the Yucca Mountain disposal site was so shortsighted. The US also has large amounts of waste building up at the nuclear plants and it is a far greater threat in the storage buildings that it would be under a mountain.
