If apple pips taste good then they wouldn't have much B17 in them. It

would taste rather bitter if they had a lot of it. Some apples just

don't have much in the seeds. You'll know what I mean once you get a

very bitter apple pip, its bitter in a very unique chemical kinda way.

For a while I would eat an entire apple leaving nothing but the stem.

I'm too paranoid to eat apple seeds. They contain cyanogenic glycoside -

cyanide. Granted, you probably can't eat enough seeds to kill yourself.

The seeds have to be hydrolized in the gut before the cyanide is released,

fyi. I don't know if it can build up, etc. - never spent any time studying

it - maybe someone else has more details......

Actually I have heard of someone who did die after consuming large ammounts

of appleseeds. He'd apparently saved them up, dried for snacking and the

cyanide did him in.

I always thought apple seeds were poisonous? It must be an old wives

tale! LOL

That's nature's way of preventing these seeds from being chewed. They

*are* toxic. Animals are supposed to eat them whole, add manure to them

and plant them in the ground. Too bad he didn't learn from ny

Appleseed to save them and spread them across the countryside.

That's what I was thinking, if the purpose of the fruit is so animals eat it

and distribute the seeds, then there's got to be something about the seeds

to keep them from being eaten themselves!

Actually, according to Dr. Krebs, the cyanide is part of the vitamin B-

17 and is harmless in small amounts. It piqued my interest because as

a member of BackYard Fruit Growers there were old recipes using parts

of fruits I'd always heard to avoid because of the cyanide. I could

find very little information about how much was safe and if the

recipes were safe. They said cooking removed the cyanide, but I also

c ouldn't find out how long to cook it to be sure it was gone. When I

read " World Without Cancer " it all made sense, as the cyanide isn't

really an issue at all in normal amounts as the body can deal with it,

but the anti-cyanide scare was all part of the backlash against this

guy's cancer cure he was trying to use. No wonder our ancestors used

to love black cherries! The " cyanide " in them was actually B-17, a

potent healer of cancer and some other conditions.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, he ate almost a whole cup of them,

so his body didn't have enough enzymes to lock away the cyanide that

was released.

How do you explain nuts then?

Like most things, there's a big (probably) difference between eating the

seeds of a single apple and eating a handful. Just the same I'm quite happy

to let the composter have them!

I've been married to a nut for 7 years and I can't possibly explain him

LOL. I was just making a comment, not trying to start a debate, if you want

to eat apple seeds go right ahead! I just don't have any inclination to do

so.

Well, the nuts we consume don't have cyanide (though they do have enzyme

inhibitors, which is why we soak them). That may be why we generally

consider nuts foods but not apple seeds.
