If things got that bad, they might demand more pay. Supposedly Qaddafi is paying his mercs handsomely. They might also fight harder because, as seems to be the case in Libya, that they are murdered if they are caught by the rebels. Their employer might well pay them more if things were looking bad, though I suspect that some would be looking for a way out no matter how good the pay.
