The Chinese have long known the advantage of wealth. In their various imperial periods they were rather like a regional US with even the Roman Empire trading along with Silk Road with China. Wealth poured into China for a long time. However, internal wars for power and the collapse of the Western Nations (in part caused by trade since after the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe ended up producing little the rest of the world wanted but the European elites still wanted their goodies. The result was than in a fairly short period of time, the Europeans has sent most of their gold and valuables out of Europe for luxury goods and the result was grinding poverty in Europe for centuries. Sounds rather familiar.) disrupted the Chinese economy time and again.

The Chinese also have a history of using their wealth to fund wars on their neighbors. Several times they have conquered and ruled the Vietnamese and others. Sometimes that rule lasted for centuries. I have little doubt that once China thinks it can get away with it, that it will start stomping on its neighbors. I don't know if the US will intervene because of the threat of an EMP attack on the US that would knock us out for a decade or more and cost half or more of the US population over time (to starvation, lack of medical care, violence, etc.). This would happen because the US infrastructure is totally unprepared for such an attack. We could in turn nuke China to a cinder, but a weak, pacifistic president might not do that even with such a provocation as wiping out the country via EMP attack.

Anyway, my point is that China sees that whole area as its property because at one time or another it either conquered the surrounding land or was paid tribute but those countries to keep China away. They may well try to fight for it all again. Even if there was some kind of division of the territory, that might actually make things worse since China would not doubt draw resources from under its neighbors territory or claim the others were doing it and use it as a pretext for war to take it all over.

Really, the reason China is doing this is because they have discovered the wonderful advantage to wealth: Unsustainable conspicious consumption. It would be better for them to develop some kind of neo-communism where everyone gets their share -a greater share than before- but not so much that they roll around in wealth either.If the Chinese have their way, the rest of the world will get poorer, and I must say we probably deserve it, because we have been consuming at unsustainable levels for too long now anyway.
