This was said to be the strongest quake to have hit Japan in 1,200 years. I also found this the other day, it is a chart showing the frequency of earthquakes per year based on magnitude. There is a better chart somewhere, but this is the one I found. I'll also post it in the pictures folder on the site in case it doesn't coming through in the message.
