British Winter Flu Death Toll Reaches 112

Friday, January 14, 2011 | Comments: 0

The British Health Protection Agency (HPA) has said that the addition of 62 more

deaths to the winter flu death toll last week, has pushed up the overall number

to 112, reports the BBC.

The HPA did warn that the apparent spike could be simply due to late reporting.

Most of the deaths recorded last week are believed to have occurred around the

Christmas period. With schools re-opening soon, British health authorities have

warned parents to take extra care to vaccinate their children and prevent a

renewed round of mass infections.

Swine flu was believed to be responsible for most of the deaths which include 9

children under the age of 14. 95 of the deaths since October were posititively

linked to swine flu. The HPA said an encouraging sign was the decline in the

number of people visiting their doctors presenting flu-like symptoms.
