Papua New Guinea shaken by powerful earthquake

A powerful earthquake has struck the island of New Britain off Papua New Guinea.

A local tsunami alert has been issued.

The 6.6 magnitude quake struck within the past hour.

The epicentre was a fairly shallow 33km and was near the town of Kandrian.

Earlier this morning there was a 6.3 magnitude quake off the eastern coast of

Japan's main island of Honshu.
