Crescent City was evacuated far ahead of the tsunami. The city was devastated by a tsunami in 1964, following an earthquake in Alaska. The community learned its lesson, built a sea wall and heeded today's warnings. Residents watched from high ground as the tsunami hit, battering some boats, but the sea wall held. Homes and businesses in the city were not damaged. Boats were torn loose from their moorings at the harbor at Santa Cruz. Some sank in the harbor, while others were washed out into Monterey Bay, battering other boats as they went. One man is reported missing. He was swept to sea while photographing the tsunami with friends near the mouth of the Klamath River.
