Its possible that if the Taliban had stayed in power that they might have made a move on Islamabad anyway, even if the US wasn't in Afghanistan. The Pashtun tribe is split by the Pakistan/Afghanistan border and they don't have much truck with either government. Since that tribe technically controls a large part of Pakistan including land close to Islamabad, they might have made a go if they thought the government was turning on them for any reason.
