Hello fellow parents,

My second son, six months old, is starting on solids and I have yet to find a

zwieback toast (or other suitable finger food for his age) WITHOUT milk/dairy

ingredients. I've checked 5 different brands at a couple different stores. Has

anyone found a product and used it successfully (no allergic reaction)?

Thanks!

Hi ,

I gave my second just regular zwieback toast. Dr. Goldberg says to avoid

dairy, but if I remember correctly, foods that have just a touch of dairy

(like bread) should be OK. My daughter never reacted. But if your older

son reacts very strongly to dairy, then I can understand you apprehension to

milk even as a minor ingredient for your younger son. Anyone know if

saltine crackers are OK?

I remember when my daughter was 6 months old. I was so anxious and nervous

about would I lose her somewhere along the way too, like I did my son.

Hopefully you aren't suffering from this as I did, but if you are it might

ease you to know that my daughter is doing just fine. She's almost 3 and

talks and talks and talks. She lights up a room when she enters and my

son adores her (when they aren't fighting over toys). It has been such a

blessing, a dose of normalcy, for our family. Dr. Goldberg asks after her

and watches for signs to make sure she's progressing as she should, and that

helps me feel secure.

Here's another method of assurance. Since ASD is a movement disorder, there is

a test that can detect it as early as 6-8 months of age. You hold the baby in

front of you by their hip area and tilt their body from side to side 45 degrees

each direction. A baby with neurological damage such as autism will allow their

head to tilt with their body, a baby who is developing normally will keep their

head perpendicular to the ground while they are being tilted. This milestone is

reached between 6-8 months of age.

There are some little animal shaped cookies/crackers at the Good

Earth Store in the gluten free/dairy free isle. They are very good.
