Iranian Warships Complete Suez Canal Transit

CAIRO -- Two Iranian warships exited the Suez Canal on Tuesday and are now in

Mediterranean waters, according to the Suez Canal Authority.

" They are now in Mediterranean waters, " according to a canal authority official

quoted by AFP.

Iranian state media said the ships were heading to Syria, in a move described as

" provocative " by Israel.

The two ships -- the patrol frigate Alvand and support ship Kharg -- entered the

canal shortly after dawn Tuesday.

They were the first Iranian warships to pass through the canal since the 1979

Islamic revolution and are on a journey that will take them past Israel's

territorial waters.

Israel described the situation as an " unprecedented Iranian military presence "

in the Mediterranean and called for a firm reaction from the international

community.
