Isn't a large part of the sizable tax we pay on gasoline intended as a

'road use tax'... But if they call it a 'milea4ge tax' they can collect

it twice and no one will ever know... >:-}

Any wagers on if this " tracking system " in addition to

continuously uplinking GPS data will also include an engine kill and door

lock feature so Big Brother can easily collect any " Thought

Criminals " Citizens Obama and Pelosi or some neo-fascist that

follows them want detained...

Yes I have a low opinion of politicians of all persuasions. Any one

that want the job should never be permitted to hold it!

The Obama administration has floated a transportation authorization bill

that would require the study and implementation of a plan to tax

automobile drivers based on how many miles they drive.

The plan is a part of the administration's " Transportation

undated draft of which was obtained this week by

Transportation Weekly.

This follows a March Congressional Budget Office report that supported

the idea of taxing drivers based on miles driven.

Among other things, CBO suggested that a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax

could be tracked by installing electronic equipment on each car to

determine how many miles were driven; payment could take place

electronically at filling stations.

You're right. Much of the cost at the pump if federal and state taxes on the gas. Supposedly this money was to go for road maintenance but somehow US roads and bridges have a grade of "D" and need many trillions of dollars to bring them up to code. Simply put that money usually went into the general fund and was spent on other things and only on roads on an as needed basis, usually as needed to build new roads for developers who put big money in the politicians' pockets.

Tacking systems already exist, as do ones that can shut down cars. This is exactly what the OnStar and like systems are. These are the ones that aren't just a dashboard GPS system but ones that are tied into all functions of the car. It seems to be a very popular service. This might not be able to be wired into existing cars, just the tracking systems that record routes and distances. Even this could be valuable to the information hungry government computers since it would reveal patterns which would tell a lot about the person in question. Like I said, I can see this one day being tied to a rationing system based on typical driving patterns, perhaps this would be tied to much higher prices once the rationing limit was reached. In this case the ration could be based on the lower end of gas usage forcing people to pay more eventually.

Of course, if this happens, what will happen is people will drive even less. They will plan their trips more efficiently and walk more between shopping locations, something I already do unless I think I'll be getting a lot at different locations. This will result in decreasing revenues again and another call for a new tax. Then again remember that the goals of this administration are high fuel prices to force people to be less mobile in the first place. I can see this really hitting rural folks, potentially forcing them to leave rural areas the government wants to buy up and put off limits for human usage. People might still laugh at this, but the program to create a massive wild park in the Western Plains is well afoot. Even around my place in Alabama the state is sniffing around buying up land for its "Forever Wild" project. Oddly enough the hundreds of thousands of acres they have already bought conform to the land maps in UN Agenda 21, AKA the Treaty of Rio.

Its good not to trust politicians. All but a few are trash who worship power and can't get enough. Even if the Republicans take the White House in 2012 and control at least the House, I don't expect them to undo any of Obama's programs because they will love having the control.

They could put one of these on Air Force One and tax the President for miles

flown.
